Few things will get this list more worked up than "The Airfoil Discussion". One group will get worked up if you deviate, even a small amount, from the plans. Another group worked very hard to develop the ASXXXXX airfoil, to the point of donating money and time to promote the project. This airfoil was specifically designed for this plane and early result in flying aircraft are promising, but your right I haven't read any discussion of stalling behavior. Could be it's a non-event and no one has mentioned it as a result.. However, with very few exceptions, everyone means well and promotes their position with intelligent and courteous commentary. I've learned a great deal here and once the dust settles everyone works hard to help you complete your aircraft in any way they can. All in all this is a very good group. I agree with you in that this is experimental aviation and you are free to modify the design in any way you feel is required to make this your dream plane. I can't help but drool alittle every time I see Marks KR for instance but His is just one example of many very kool KR's and builders on this list. One major concern of many here is that this design is more easily modified than most, that's what attracts many to the design. But, also, that is where much of the trouble for the KR community begins. Someone will make vast and sweeping mods to the basic plane and then, unfortunately, have an accident during the test phase. Then an uninformed press goes on and on about the KR that crashed, and that's the unfair part that worries many here. A highly modified KR should probably be registered as a "Denny Special" , or whatever, and not a KR. That at least, to some degree, protects the KR community from unfortunate bad press. In some respect this list is very much like a family and once you've paid your dues you will be amazed at how helpful everyone can be. Denny ... robert tallini wrote: There is one more point I should like to make concerning my request for opinions regarding the strength of 3/16" ply webs on 23012 airfoil spars. I was disappointed, and not a little irritated to find myself the subject of comments concerning my general intelligence and lack of flying experience. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? In addition to the technical development work, an article was prepared and published in Contact! magazine about the development of the airfoil and its characteristics compared to other popular airfoils. The airfoil was tested in the air on a representative KR2 by Troy Petteway, who found the performance to be as predicted. There is a simple plot of lift coefficient of the RAF48, AS5045, and 23012 at http://flysquirrel.net/CLplot01.JPG and the 23012's plot (the heavy dashed line) shows why the Bonanza goes radical when the wing runs out of lift... the Cl looks like the peak of the Matterhorn at the top. Not to criticize the Bonanza here, but rather to explain what the AS50xx-series development was looking for (and found). When you stated your desire to use the 23 airfoil, it's old school to some of us. If you will notice I tried, in every post to say, put whatever on your airplane you want. If you saw the input, of what I would consider to be useful information, as personnal insults against anything, heck I know A&Ps I wouldn't let stand next to my airplane of CFII I wouldn't let my mother fly with, then you were taking constructive input the wrong way. If you put the airfoil of your choice on your KR, I see that you have received some very valuable input from some people who are familiar with the airfoil, on the KR and not on the KR. Take whatever you can glean from the conversation and go with it. A lot of times what is said on lists might come across totally different than the posted intended. Don't read between the lines. I've been waiting on an insurance quote for a 1968 midtime Cessna 150. The C150 is my backup plan to the KR. I just got a quote for a premium of $3100. After I get my private license, then it ONLY costs an additional $900! Oh, the good part is: after I get my private license, the premium does not go down and is not adjusted. If this is the rate for a type certificated C150, what is it going to cost for an experimental aircraft such as a KR? Can you obtain insurance for an experimental airplane such as a KR? Since I'm going to finance this myself from my life's savings, can I just buy liability instead of the full "hull" insurance. I guess I'm thinking similar to auto insurance. I know that flying is not an inexpensive past time, but I keep hearing about the movement to get the average joe into the world of flight. What is the industry talking about? Do they mean the pedal planes that we all wanted to have when we were youngsters? I know you are all laughing your pants off! That's okay. I'm going to laugh too, just as soon as they disconnect me from the heart monitor and breathing device. I'm sorry for the whine, I just thought my local insurance company would break the news to me gently. The funny part is, the broker seemed to think that I was getting the bargain of the year. Except for an improperly adjusted meter, I've never heard of a thermocouple giving falaciously HIGH readings. Liv & lurn :-) As a point of interest, the stock sensor location will typically give readings that are higher -- MUCH higher, in most cases -- than you'll get by installing the thermocouple under a spark plug. -------------------------------------------------------- The metallurgical thingee with cast aluminum heads is rather interesting. Unlike most other metals, aluminum (and a few others) display what foundrymen call 'white shortness' in that when the temperature reaches the lower edge of the plastic range, the metal stops being malleable and goes through a brittle phase. If subjected to stress during that phase it breaks apart like a sugar cookie... and will crack very easily under even moderate amounts of strain. This is a decided advantage for those of us who make an occaisonal casting since we can break up a big crankcase or transmission housing by simply heating it up and tapping it with a hammer, giving us chunks small enough to fit in a crucible or melting pot. But it can produce some painful surprises for the fellow who regularly exceeds the recommended peak CHT :-) -R.S.Hoover ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2003 15:18:53 -0800 From: larry severson To: tbsr@arctic.net, KRnet Subject: Re: KR>My Kid Is much cheaper to maintain! Buying hull insurance seems, in most cases, a poor choice. Of course, I have heard of one person who spent $90K, mostly electronics, on his KR2. The C150, on the other hand is not inexpensive. Lighter than the Premolded Rand Turtledeck 2.) Structurally stiff as the Fuselage Skin or better 3.) Installed before Christmas Break. I had originally planned on using the Rand Premolded T-Deck, but was unable to because the person I bought my project from made the boat 2 inches wider. So rather than split a Rand parts in two, and then "scab" in filler, I decided to build my own aft deck, forward deck and canopy frame. I ordered a 2 inch wider canopy from Todd's and recieved it Mid-October. Since I'm a smaller person (5'7")and my wife is smaller than me, I decided that I could lower the top of the canopy in order to get air over the tail sooner. I'm building a tail-dragger, so the sooner I can get Tail Authority, the better. Unfortunately, if you are "Bubba-sized", you won't fit. I also ordered the canopy medium dark tinted because of the main mission of theis airplane is Day-time VFR. We all have experienced what it's like to fly in a hot cockpit during the bright sunshine beating down on you. I'll also have the added UV protection for the interior. The T-Deck final weight is 5 lbs 14oz. which was right-on what my estimate was. The Rand parts are 2 inches narrower, and weigh on the average of 9 LBS. OK, Goal #1 accomplished. I tested the panel stiffness by placing a 1/4 inch drive 6 inch extension on a spring scale, and pressed in until I got .090 deflection of the plywood in the center of each "bay". 18 lbs average on the spring scale. I then tested my T-Deck in the same fashion: 20 lbs. average on the same spring scale. So now my Installed T-Deck actually tested Stiffer than the Plywood Skin of the fuselage. OK, Goal #2 accomplished Albeit today I'm a bit sleep deprived, I finished the installation up about 12:30 AM this morning. OK, Goal #3 accomplished also! When I brought the T-Deck upstairs to install it, my wife asked "I wonder if that Cardboard template still fits"? OOOH, Gez, I forgot about that, Hmmm, Well let's hold it up and see? She next accused me of using the template as a sanding guide when we fitted it up in front of the "roll-hoop"! Whew! Just lucky I guess! I wanted to take this opportunity to Thank and encourage Dan Heath for all the help and kind words over the last couple of months. Dan has posted pictures of my Turtledeck Progress at: http://kr-builder.org/ScottCable/index.html I'll send somemore photos as soon as they get developed! If an aircraft, any aircraft is flown down final with the proper = approach speed, and then THE ROUND OUT is performed properly, the = increased performance due to ground effect will cause a momentary float, = or rather a pause in the descent of the aircraft to the runway. Once = this increased performance goes away, if one maintains a proper landing = attitude for conditions, then the aircraft will gently settle to the = runway of its own accord. The key is not trying to find some magical = moment to "flare", but rather to observe the aircraft's performance and = response to inputs and let it fly, literally working with it, instead of = against it. Larry wrote a beautiful description of this when he = detailed his latest flight test. He didn't try to fly the plane his way = and force it to land or takeoff or maneuver. He worked with it and let = it do all the work, hence he merely thought it all the way to the = runway. A certain amount of float will always occur in ground effect = temporarily, unless one enters ground effect with too much angle of = attack in which case the aircraft is too far behind the power curve, and = it will drop suddenly with ANY further reduction in airspeed. I suspect = this is why the Bonanza has such a exciting stall, and why the 23012 = airfoil mixed with the dimensions of the KR produce such a narrow = landing envelope. In any case, the flare to land is not one moment in = time during a landing cycle, but rather a continuous adjustment to the = deceleration of the aircraft in ground effect, resulting in a smooth = transition from flying to taxiing. If one will think of flying the = aircraft, regardless of which aircraft it is, ALL the way to the ground, = then there will be less tendency to attempt to find this magical "flare" = point, and more of just flying 12 inches off the ground. Any aircraft = that gain performance significantly in ground effect, and the KR is one = of them, it is important to think in terms of a gradual transition, and = not try to find some point in time for the "flare". If this is your = style of landing, then your education will be one of many more failures = trying to find the "sweet spot" when you can stall the aircraft to the = ground from the last 50 feet, instead of landing properly. If you find = yourself in slow flight with very mushy controls and lack of aircraft = response on final you are too slow, and nearing a stall condition, on = the back side of the power curve.
