Oh, the good part is: after I get my private license, >the premium does not go down and is not adjusted. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I suspect you quote was so high for two reasons. First, you have no flight time and most of the flight hours would be for training or solo by a low time pilot. Both high risk. Second, your location. I suspect there are many more accidents in your part of the world because of the way aircraft are used and the conditions they operate in. My Tripacer insurance cost me $625 a year for MOTION, NON- MOTION, AND LIABILITY ($1,000,000.00) and has not gone up for the past three years as many have. I have it insured for $16,000 and some will say that is too low but that is what I paid for the airplane and probably couldn't complain if that's what I get if it's totalled as I've gotten 500 hours of flght time from it. As for the KR, I'm a 950 hour Commerical pilot, SEL, non-instrument rated, with about 15 hours of tailwheel time. Avemco is the only company that would even give me liability and then only because I'm using a Continental aircraft engine and not an auto conversion. They want $965 a year and won't even offer MOTION, NON-MOTION coverage. I've got a three month coverage and will seek re-quotes when I get some hours on the airplane. I would expect the quote to drop by 50% after 40 hours but that is just a WAG on my part. With all that said, don't give up on your dream of flying. When there's a will, there's a way. Good luck. With an aircraft certified engine it may be cheeper . I have found insurance generally costs more for experimental aircraft if you canm get it at all . What usually brings the costs down are hours and additional ratings , such as an instument rating . Good luck on finding a kr2 with a 500lb cabin load . Your thinking on the 150 is right on , but you better check the usefull load of that bird as i think you will be over its useful load with full fuel.. (It has the retract gear which has been permanently fixed down.) My trailer has a suspension designed for 750 kg Gross. I tied it down over the main wheels with tie down ratchet straps, 2 per wheel, and removed the tail wheel and replaced it with a block of wood which I screwed to the trailer floor. This allowed the aircraft's suspension to do all the work. Being that the track does not alter when the suspension works I had no troubles. If I'd had other fixed gear where the track widens when compressed I'd have put an old tyre, on it's side, under the mains, to allow for some movement, then tied down the wheels. (If there are wheel pants, remove them for trailing long distance to allow to tie down securely). Just look how most vehicle movers tie down cars. The previous owner had checked out the new owner during several left-seat flights at Seattle. An independent A&P had checked the aircraft on a pre-sale inspection - no gripes. > The new owner had removed and securely crated the wings. The box was strapped on the trailer. No problem with that. The fuselage on the gear was placed on the flat bed trailer and secured with 2-inch nylon cargo ratchets running over a single 3/8 inch bolt at the stub wing attach brackets on each side. The tail wheel was secured at the spring with another 2-inch cargo ratchet wrapped around the spring. The new owner stated that the landing gear was deflected "one or two inches" and felt that was firm enough to prevent shifting. After arriving with the KR-2 on the trailer at home in Alaska, several cracks were noticed on the exterior skin at the lower left firewall. Closer inspection revealed cracks all around the plywood fire wall. The VW engine, prop, mount and firewall were making early preparations to depart the aircraft as a unit. So what caused this sad situation? > The problem with the rig was: A 600 pound KR-2 was hard mounted at the main spar on a tandem-axel flat bed trailer rated for 6,000 pounds. Then it was run over hundreds of miles of gravel roads through Canada and Alaska at about 60 mph. The stiff trailer springs and its rock-hard tires had put who knows how many hard landings on that defenseless KR-2. > Moral of the story: If you are going to trailer your KR, let the > little Lamb tires and spring gear do their job. I am using a Motorola 720i color screen cell phone. It takes about 4-5 seconds to get the moving Doppler radar but you can also get cloud cover, visibility on the screen. In addition you get current TAF about the airport you put in, full METAR plus decoded METAR. While this would not be a substitute for radar, not that I encourage anyone to install radar in a KR or any other airplane I might be associated with seeing that radar may be a thorn under someones nail, it is a good little situational awareness product. Another thing is you don't have to buy a years subscription, you can do it monthly. Thanks Adrian, I take that as a compliment. See Ron, ya just gotta know how to take things, or construe them in such a manner to suit your needs:-). Sorry, the signature line stays. Dana Overall 1999 & 2000 National KR Gathering host. I was just wondering >if you are running the stock wing or the "new" wing and whatever other >modifications you have done? Justin ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'm using the "stock" RAF 48 with a 4" tip past the 36" outer rib. It is set to "plans" 3 1/2 degree AOA with a 3 degree washout. Other mod's include: - 24" fuselage stretch from rear spar back. - HS moved forward 2"s from the stretch location to provide more room in the tail for hardware, i.e. bellcrank, counter balance, etc. That increases my VS area by a two inch strip on the front also. - 30" Diehl gear legs (standard is 24") with 600X6 low profile wheels and tires with disk brakes, a 6" steerable , full swivel tailwheel. I'm going to a lighter 4" tailwheel to get 2 pounds of the tail and move my CG forward 1/2". I've had it install before but it had a bad bearing and I've not gotten it re-installed. (having too much fun flying). - No header tank. One 12 1/2 gal tank in each outer wing panel with a two elect fuel pump system with backup elect power. With over 6 hours run time and 2 hours in the air the fuel system has performed flawlessly. Well, that is unless you count the time I taxied out with the fuel shut off. :-) A checklist not used is just so much bad toilet paper. -Custom canopy and turtledeck. I laminated a windshield and turtledeck bow. I used the forward portion of a broken Pulsar canopy for the windshield, built a single gullwing door and used the glass from a standard KR half bubble for the side glass. The right side glass panel is removable for maintenance and as an emergency exit. Turtledeck started as a standard KR turtledeck that I mounted, split down the middle, lengthened and reshaped to match my turtledeck bow, and added the rear windows. -I'm using a dual stick setup with the throttle on the left sidewall. That's the way I like to fly. Custom panel with all switches and control knobs on the left side so I don't have to change hands on the stick to operate. - 0-200 engine with a five inch prop extention. - With 2 hours (four flights) in the air, all systems have been totally trouble free and the only thing I can think of that I'd change is the pitch on the prop. If I were starting over I'd probably go with the new airfoil, etc. but this thing flys just fine. There are probably a hundred more little things that may not be standard KR but I'll not bore you with details. You'll have to attend next Years Gathering for that. I have my KR registered as a "KR 2 Modified" in case any of my changes come back to bite me. The Beech "Starship" was all glass and probably operated below "zero F" much of the time at altitude. I plan on flying my KR all winter. If it's not too cold to preflight, I'M GOING FLYING !!!!! For us average builders without Mark's qualifications and abilities just build it to the KR2S plans and you will have a GREAT flying airplane. Don't try to make "rocket science" of a great little 30 year old design that was just a mod from an even older design. Follow the plans unless you know what you're doing and you will get in the air faster and much more likely to finish and enjoy you're creation. If you had used the time you've been "worrying" about it to actually build it you would have it half finished by now. :-) Larry Flesner Carterville, Illinois ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Dec 2003 07:13:56 -0600 From: larry flesner To: KRnet Subject: KR>Pitot error Message-ID: <3.0.6.32.20031223071356.00796750@pop.midwest.net> In-Reply-To: <000801c3c880$69a69600$75a0fea9@johnjane> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" MIME-Version: 1.0 Precedence: list Message: 20 >I have my pitot and static currently mounted about 3" below the left >wing and above but in line with the outer tyre edge of the main wheel leaving about 7 inches of clearance or less when I put on the spats. >Regards John ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ My pitot/static is pretty much "plans" design. I mounted mine in the lead edge area of the left outer wing panel just forward of the spar and it seems to perform o.k. I made my last flight with a set of C-150 wheel pants installed. They came within about three inches of the P/S tubes and did not seem to change my readings at all. If you're wondering how the geometry on that can be, I have an 8 foot wide main gear track. My mains are very nearly under the wing attach point. I have extra length tubing so I can hook it up when attaching the wing and the extra length just coils in the wing. The unit is located so that the lead edge of the tubes are still behind the lead edge of the wing to lessen the chance of getting damaged on the ground. Good luck.
