Here in = Florida we do not face the fall and winter time challenges to flying as = badly as the rest of the country. At one point Brian Kraut and I = discussed having something similar to Dana Overall's latest get = together, and have kind of a warm up to the Gathering. I would support = and even help co-sponsor such an event here in Central Florida, and try = to arrange it at SFB or LEE airports. They each have plenty of space, = and good FBO support, LEE is uncontrolled and out of Bravo airspace for = those without transponders, and SFB has the better ramp space and FBOs = but is within the 30nm veil. (actually under the shelf). I am in no way = trying to take away from what Larry Flesner has already organized, I = intend on flying to this year's Gathering. But I would support a = supplement to this year's and possibly replace the Gathering with one = here next year. But wherever it is, late spring to summer is best, all = the way around. The Idea of alternate gatherings is good. However just to be clear, I would in on way subvert or change the gathering that now takes place. It should remain central so that it is accessable from most parts of the country. The organization and effort put in for these events has been excellent. I personally have had poor attendance and a lot of it had nothing to do with weather. Though one morning I did take off heading for a gathering at O dark thirty and got hypothermia so bad I coudn't stop shaking and turned around and went home. My main disagreement was and is the time of year only. As pointed out in "Advertising" not meny KR's show up for some of the events. To get Einstine to give a speech wouldn't you first see when the best time is for him to come?. Oshkosh is always in the direct middle of summer. The fear is that if you plan the gathering too close to that, no one will attend. If you discuss vacation and holiday plans with most family people, you would come up with issues that start with "My family plans, We plan to, etc. When it comes to flying, the We in any statment I make is referring to My KR and I. The point about not holding it too close to Oshkosh. Since no-one seems to ever see too many KR's at Oshkosh... my thinking is that if the KR gathering were held the SAME week as Oshkosh... perhaps we wouldn't loose that many folks. I don't know about the larger 'netter population, but it is unlikely that I could swing two weeks of Airplane activity a year. I have only two weeks of vacation, and my wife would probably like me to spend at least one of those with her. My wife isn't interested in flying at all, but supports my addiction, so I can swing a trip once in a while to travel all the way from Oregon to Perry OK, as I did one year. It was fun! Now if I were retired... it would be different. But I don't know how many years in a row, I would go to both Oshkosh and the KR Gathering assuming I was a annual attendee... but for me retirement is 15-24 years away. So maybe one year we could consider holding the KR gathering closer to Oshkosh as far as a date. Flying from the Pacific Nortwest is more reasonable as I have to cross a couple of mountain ranges to get there. --- Ross ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2004 06:00:01 -0600 From: "Mark Jones" To: "KRnet" Subject: Re: KR>Spruce Order Message-ID: <001001c402a9$63ee32a0$6401a8c0@wi.rr.com> References: <001801c4024c$711fdc60$6401a8c0@wi.rr.com> <00b601c40266$ab6f62e0$6401a8c0@charlesmidkiff> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Precedence: list Message: 4 I am going to use it on my elevator. When I hosted the gathering, the thoughts presented to me concerning the time frame of the gathering was centered around vacations. The people I talked to enjoyed having the gathering after the summer vacation months so as to not conflict with family vacations. By August or so, kids were in school, vacations were over and most could commit to a weekend for the gathering. In regards to weather in that ol valley of KY, yes we did have weather come in at the end of the gathering. However, the prior year we had beautiful weather and had 17 KRs. This was the largest number of KRs in recent memory http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/barkley99/ . I did listen to input as to the time. In my case, the above preference was prevailing. If you want to change it, host it. Just keep it in an area where people can fly to it from the east, west, north and south. Just what I observed while hosting it. If this is all there is to it, I will rebuild it myself. Secondly: How do you fill back up with brake fluid? These were installed already so I am not familiar with them. I am accustomed to brake systems which use a central reservoir, not individual masters. >Colin & Bev Rainey ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Colin, If your's is a Cleveland brake assy or similar there is a single "O" ring on the piston. Remove the assy, remove the piston and install a new "O" ring. Reassemble and refill. Fill with fluid from the bottom and push the fluid to the reservoir until full. A second body may be helpful there. If your assy's are Cleveland or similar it is really a no brainer. Best of all, we'd all end up with KRnet stickers! Several folks have looked into having them made, and we're still working on that (anybody that has a line on sticker-making-for-cheap is welcome to contact me). By the way, the original logo was dreamed up by Oscar Zuniga, and actually created by former member Robert Covington. I think we're far enough along that we need to know how many of these things we're going to need to order. The best way I can think of to do that is to let y"all order them, and then we'll know. You need to go through the online ordering process even if you send a check, just so we can capture the quantity we're going to need. Bob Lee has conjured up a web page to let you do that. Please pay attention and answer the questions, check the boxes, and do it right to make sure everything works correctly. One thing I thought of (actually my wife thought of it) that would make this a lot easier on me is if most everybody ordering would pay by check and send a self addressed stamped envelope with their order. This would make it very easy to open an envelope, look at the check, stuff stickers in the SASE, and go to the next one. If you do that, I don't even think I'll have to use the "envelope stuffer" volunteers. I'll still take Paypal, but that costs money, and it would allow me to screw up your address between my computer and an envelope, and would be a lot more work. You'll see on Bob's ordering page that there's a one dollar incentive to just send the self addressed stamped envelope with your check. As far as accountability, you're just going to have to trust me to do the right thing and keep up with it. Then again, I may only get five orders and nobody will have to worry about! The stickers will probably be 3" diameter and will be the KRnet logo, except with "KRnet" changed to www.KRnet.org so people can actually find it on the web. If five colors turns out to be prohibitively expensive, I may change the red plane to blue and white or something, and the background will probably be clear instead of white, with the letters still white with a black outline. This way, you can stick it on your airplane and have the color show through the clear. But it may end up with no clear at all. We're still working this issue. Whatever we end up with, I think you'll find a use for it. You can see the logo, and place your order, at http://krgathering.org/KRnet/KRnet_pro_shop_order.htm . We'll let it go for about a week before we'll call it "done", and then we'll place our order with the vendor. I'm not sure what we'll have to do about overseas orders. Shipping might be prohibitive. I'm assuming that if it's sent by slow boat (nobody's in a hurry, right?), five extra bucks ought to take care of most places, but I reserve the right to be wrong about that. Maybe the folks in places like SA or Australia could pool their orders and just pay shipping one time, and split them up over there. Then again, that might not make sense at all. That might be something you guys can work out among yourselves, if one guy from each place wants to volunteer to handle it. I'm open to suggestions. I'd rather it not turn into a complete circus though. So, get those checks headed my way, and don't forget to fill out the order form. My mailing address is on the second page if you check the box "order by check". No promises on how long this is going to take, but it shouldn't be too long.
