Outstanding! I'm sure I don't have to tell you not to rush to fly it tomorrow if the wind's not right. And if you're like me, you're probably ready to slap the next guy that asks you when it's going to fly! Wouldn't it be fairly safe to just fly it with the same prop and pitch as you had before, but with a little boost dialed in? But maybe I missed it and you have a different prop now. Still it seems like the amount of boost is something you could work up to in steps, if that's physically easy to accomplish. Then you could dial in more boost as your experience level increased, or at least at altitude. Of course that's easy coming from me, just barely getting back in the saddle, and brand new to tailwheels. And I've got no room to talk...I'm going from 65 hp champ directly to a 135 hp KR2S, with a tad of Starduster, Swift, and KR2 time in between. I've spent the last two hours writing up a punch list (filling one page, and fearing the next), and then some time just sitting in the cockpit dreaming. I can actually visualize flying it now, and I'm already fired up about it. So far I have 24 items on the list, so if I do just one a day... The condition that I designed the engine controls for was a go-around on short final. I built a Throttle quadrant that has throttle, waste gate, mixture and cowl flaps all together in my left hand. The stick is in my right hand. In an emergency full power situation I simply shove all four levers full forward. This give full throttle, open waste gate, mixture full rich, and cowl flaps open. To go to "war emergency power" I pull back on the waste gate control. Operationally, I know that the throttle is full open, mixture is full rich, and cowl flaps are full open before I begin to add boost. In addition, when you are close to the ground you most likely don't need boost so in one motion of left hand forward you are very close to full power so that you can concentrate on flying the airplane and not worrying about engine control settings. All of the commercially available throttle quadrants were too expensive for what you get so I just built one up out of 6061 Al. I bent up two "L" shaped pieces of Al that form top-right and bottom-left sides. The bottom-left piece is mounted to the left sidewall and has the pivot (an3 bolt) and the levers (fashioned from 1/8" Al). The top-right piece has slots in the top for the levers and mounting holes on the right side. A wing nut on the pivot bolt outside of the right side allows for adjusting the tension on the pivot to prevent creep of the controls. You might want to reconsider having your waste gate control conflicting with your flying hand. You can fly the airplane without power but I would not recommend powering the airplane without flying! Your KR has flown and mine has not yet, so consider the source of this recommendation. The prop was installed last year and has made several local flights. I did not have enough power to use the ground adjustable feature. In it's current setting (Lowest pitch), I have too much power and can overboost. In the situation that Bob depicts, I would have too much to do in an emergency. After thinking all night on the subject, I want to be able to shove the power forward and just fly the plane. If during the take off roll things are well, I would add boost. Still, I would rather not have to deal with the possibility of an overboost for now. As you say Mark, try to get the plane back to, as near as I can, to operating as it used to before all the power mods. As for flying this morning, the Big Commander in the sky says to stay on the ground for now. I can't see the house across the street it's too foggy. Finished up a few minor task and then headed out to the runway to do some taxi testing. There were quite a few folks at the airport this morning and I must say as I taxied by, I turned everyone's head.As I taxied up to runway 29, I noticed there were a lot of folks standing in front of their hangers with their eyes on me. I announced "Hartford traffic experimental 6MJ executing taxi test the full length of runway 29" and with that I moved into position on 29 and pushed the throttle slowly forward. Now I can just imagine what some of these guys were thinking as I accelerated to 40 MPH down the runway with no wings on the plane. At mid runway, I backed off throttle and began braking. At the end of 29< I turned off onto the taxiway and thought to myself :now that was way too cool". So I did it again and again and again and again. Well, I made a total of five taxi runs down the runway with the fastest speed being 50 MPH per my GPS. I did not want to get any faster as I did not want to get airborne with just stub wings. The plane performed flawlessly during the taxi runs. It tracked true and took very little to keep it on the centerline. I watched my oil temp closely and it would stay at 180° when the plane was moving down the runway and was at 200° at slow taxi. The cht was staying at 280-300°. Once I was back in my hanger, I kept getting visitors who wanted to find out more about this new kid on the block. The corvair engine was really raising a lot of interest. A couple of guys even mentioned how nice it sounded out on the runway. All in all, a great morning. YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAWWWWWW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After a foggy start today, then came the heat. I did not fly. I worked on diverting more cooling air to the oil cooler, which seems to want to heat up pretty fast with the turbo. I installed my second verturi and that exercise lasted most of the day, especially after my old car broke a tie rod on the way to the store for clamps. Five hours later I returned to the hanger to continue into the evening. As I try to clear my do list, things keep happening to make it longer. Yesterday I broke a switch to my instrument lights and now the wires are shorting my position lights. Several days ago I lost my EGT indication and now my number 3 and 4 CHT readings are fluxuation. It seems that the combo gauge is about to give up the ghost. I can go without EGT, but I can't fly the new engine without CHT. Tomorrow it seems that I must remove the instrument panel to investigate the gauge and fix the light switch, that's another all day affair.
