This Ellison is sold with a Rotax attached. Can it be converted and used with my Type 4?? When you turn the fuel pump on what happens, does fuel start to flow like the gravity flow revflow? Or, will it only flow with the mixture lever rich and the throttle open? Do you think that the EFS2R has the same jetting as the EFS2. Lastly, what makes you, or how do you know that the Ellison is actually better then say the Revflow. Now I know this is a loaded question and expect a great deal of opinion. Keep In mind that no matter how good the metering is in the carb, I plan to send the mixture through the turbo and into my home made induction system. So if I can get the same amount of fuel out of the Revflow why should I go the bother of changing the carb? Orma L. My limited experience with my EFS-3A is that the engine needs to be sucking on it in order for it to flow anything more than idle amounts of fuel. In fact, the first time you run it, you have to suck on the port with a piece of plastic tubing to make it flow at all if you don't have a primer. First thing I'd do tomorrow is call Ben Ellison at 425-271-3220 and ask him what he thinks. You've probably seen it already, but there's some info on that carb on their website at http://www.ellison-fluid-systems.com/applications/rotax582.htm , and you'll find a lot more on these carbs and what makes them special in that general vicinity. As far as Ellisons in general go, I'll quote Steve Makish, who's tried just about every carb on VWs, Subarus, and now the Corvair...."you can screw around with the rest all you want, but when you get tired of fooling around, get out your wallet and buy an Ellison, and you'll be done with it". I'm pretty happy with mine, that's for sure, but I haven't flown it either. Other comments by somebody who knows what they are talking about are certainly welcome. I'm just throwing this out there because I'm afraid it's all you're going to hear... That's a great looking KR! I can't wait to see it in person in Mt. Vernon. To appreciate just how hard Bill has worked, here is the stage his KR was in just 10 1/2 months ago when I drove out to see it! It just shows you how quickly you can build these planes. Now, we just got get Bill to tell us his secret at the gathering.... :-) http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Bill_Clapp_KR2S.html Dean Cooper Jacksonville, FL Email me at dean_cooper@bellsouth.net See my KR project at www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/KR2_Home.html ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 21:56:43 -0500 From: "Mark Jones" Subject: KR> Re: CorvAircraft> Insurance To: "KR Net" , "Corvair engines for homebuilt aircraft" Message-ID: <00f701c4954f$7945f780$6401a8c0@wi.rr.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" This is just a FYI. Today, I received an insurance quote from Jim Nelson of Falcon Insurance: HULL VALUE: $20,000 HULL PREMIUM: $1,124 DEDUCTIBLES: NOT-IN-MOTION: $2000 IN-MOTION: $2000 LIMIT OF LIABILITY: $500,000 combined single limit bodily injury and property damage excluding passenger liability. LIABILITY PREMIUM: $258 MEDICAL PAYMENTS: $3,000 Including Crew MEDICAL PREMIUM: $18 TOTAL ANNUAL PREMIUM: $1,400 (This is a package price) I was very open and explained that I have a Corvair Conversion done to William Wynne's specs and have 22.6 test run hours on the engine. I also explained that I had no flight time in a KR yet had a couple hours of taxi time. Insurance is obtainable on a Corvair powered aircraft. I absolutely love the Ellison. When I installed it and hooked up the Facet fuel pump, the engine started right up and has not hesitated any since. It is not a gravity flow and does require pressure to operate. As Mark L mentioned there is a suction port which allows the internal regulator to function. Now, I did not have to pre-suck the EFS-2 to start the engine as one has to do on the EFS-3. I simply hooked everything up and started the engine. The only adjustment I ever made was the idle mixture and I have a sewing machine idle at 650 rpm and have max static of 2750 rpm with a Sterba 56x64 wood prop. With this set up, I hit 50 mph on the runway doing a taxi text at about half throttle. I was so surprised at how fast the Corvair got the KR to 50 mph that I never looked at the rpm since I was concentrating on reducing the speed before the lift from the stub wings got me airborne. Go with Ellison, you will never look back.
