I remember that the first models of helicopter AS 350 Squirrel have the windshield made from a sheet of Lexan by G.E. after two years it became yellow and it whas impossible to remove any scratches so Eurocopter factory has replaced all AS350 windschield with Plexiglass. Lexan is wery strong near impossible to break it ( it is also used for bulletproof carglasses ) flexible but is also "soft". The old plexiglass is fragile not easy to work ( it need a mould) but is clear , easy to polish and to remove any scratches , so is the best choice for our birds. Lexan is OK only on Ultralight if it is easy to replace. I could see up and down, but it was too hazy to see far. I did manage to cruise a little and discovered that at part throttle the engine would climb up to 3500 RPM. The manifold pressure did not seem to advance past 31. I still kept the waste gate open. I did not go to full throttle. I'm sure the engine would try to go past 4000 RPM. I managed to feel my way back to KPTK, using the tried and true IFR (roads). I tried to use my omni and realized that I am not proficient in the use of my new nav/com. It also appears that my Garmin 90 has died. It located 6 satellites but the signal strength was too low on all of them and I could not use it to navigate. After returning to KPTK, I removed my spinner and increased the pitch on the IVO prop. Weather and airspace permitting, tomorrow I will try the new pitch. Three F18 landed and parked this afternoon and the biz jets were in and out as if we had free jet fuel. Sorry to say that I did not look at the speed, only the RPM. I did see 120 once, but I was concerned that when I attempted to speed up, the engine would go up to 3500, with the potential to go a lot higher. My climb was between 80 and 90. Tomorrow I will try to pin down some more exact numbers. Increasing the pitch changes all the numbers anyway. I plan to look for a happy medium that will allow me the highest rate of climb utilizing most of the power of the engine. I already know that the old engine was capable of 129 Kts. My hope is that I can get 150 Kts for cruise. As I said earlier, the waste gate is still open. The bill has already been withdrawn but had been proposed by Rep. Weiner (D-NY). I wrote my congressman and Rep. May I ask all of you to do the same. People like Rep. Weiner aren't evil, just completely clueless. It is up to us to help them become informed. Thanks.
