The vertical grain of the plywood is mainly what the shear web needs (radio controlled planes usually use only vertical balsa sheet) so vertical splices don't really loose any strenght. Also, as Dean pointed out, the scarfed ply is just as strong anyway. I put all of my scarfs centered over the vertical spacers also to make it easy to clamp and glue them (waste of time to glue the scarfs and let them dry before assembling the spars) and so that strength of the scarf really is not a factor anyway. After sifting through all my offcuts I found that I could make up the web from three seperate offcuts. Would this be acceptable, my scarf joints are all 1:20. The spar would have had one scarf joint anyway due to the size of the ply sheets sold here. They will be situated at approx 25%, 40% and 90% of outboard spar span. Visit www.flycorvair.com to find William Wynne's Corvair manual. It will be the best bang for your buck that you will spend building your airplane. The deal with the '64 is that it has thinner cylinder walls, so the heads and case need to be bored to fit the '65 and later cylinders that are far more common, but I suppose it might could be made to work. You'll also need to join the CorvAircraft list by sending an email to corvaircraft-join@mylist.net , and then replying to the subsequent confirmation email. Ask that question there and you will get a definitive answer. That list is very similar to KRnet, with several Corvair experts, including William Wynne himself... I spent over 4 hours in The Porkopolis Flying Pig to attend the Gathering, and as a result, I saw KRs fly for the first time (from outside the cockpit). I knew they were a blast from the inside. Now I know they're a blast watching from the ground also. Thanks to all for the hospitality.
