I think this is per Steve's plans. Lee will have to correct me if I am wrong on that. This looks like a very good example and I intend to build ours like this. I remember when I converted the 1835 on the Little Beast, to a 1915, I did the baffling over and used Steve's plans. It was an easy job and took less than a week. http://kr-builder.org/FirewallForward/Baffeling/index.html Also available from the home page from the Firewall Forward menu pic. Lee sent these quite a while ago and I have been a little slack getting them on the site. My thanks to Lee for sending these. One other thing, for those of you who browse the site. I am running low on space and am removing some of the old and somewhat irrelevant pictures. If you find any broken links, I will appreciate your letting me know. MY set of plans says "the best and least complicated position for the pitot tube is at the very outboard end of the stub wing. you may mount the tube below the wing or through the leading edge". The stub wing is the center one that runs through the fuselage, not the "outboard" wing, so if you mount it where the plans call for, you won't have to disconnect it when you remove the wings. Mine is (gulp), exactly per the plans (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/pitot_tube.jpg ). There is some concern that propwash might interfere, but the prop arc is 16 inches away, laterally. Hopefully, at speed, that'll be enough. I've seen plenty more just like it, and have heard no complaints... One year and 105 hours and I've pulled my left wing twice to fix a fuel leak. The pitot needs to be out of the propeller slip stream. Make your hookup simple or a quick disconnect if you have a concern. My pitot / static are built like the ones in the plans and seem to be quite accurate. I attached a mounting plate to the assembly using J.B. Weld (5 minute epoxy) and mount the assembly to the wing using two screws. When I install the wing I run the hoses out the mount location hole. To mount the pitot/ static I just stick the hoses down inside the pitot/static tubes. The fit is tight enough that they don't come out or leak. If you are concerned about mounting it on the right wing with the rotating prop swirl, put it on the left wing. My prop turns clockwise (viewed from cockpit) and my pitot is on the left wing with no problems. Your primary concern (other than accuracy) should be a mount that won't get broken every time someone walks around the airplane. Get it under the wing for protection. Good luck........ Mark Langford, >Huntsville, AL ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The only concern with that location is that it's directly above the wheel pant. Depending on how the wheel cover attaches will determine whether it's a problem or not. I went to the outer wing panel to get away from that but my gear is so wide that it's still a problem for me. That's not the reason I still don't have wheel pants after 105 hours of flight time. I'm just having too much fun flying to stop and build wheel covers! I removed the ball from my hitch and made a little braket that looks like a small box that the tailweel fits inside of and bolted it to the hitch. The tailwheel sits in the bax and then is tied to it with rope. Another idea was to remove the tailweel assy where the verticle bolt goes through and then run a longer bolt through that and the hitch ball hole with large area washers - leaving it loose enough to swivel. I was able to tow without removing the rudder. I only traveled at 25 mph so the 5 mile trip took a few minutes but was uneventful. Travel when traffic is light. People will slow down for you! I only wish I had taken a picture...was thinking more about flying. Neat to see yours taxiing! Having fun yet? I got to the airport just in time to see him land his "starship" ( as he calls it) on 35. He taxiied over to my hanger and we talked a bit. Local maintenance guy was nice enough to let us hanger the plane in the corner of the Big hanger (no charge). We had a great time of lots of food and chat. Saturday showed up with lots of fog so we hung around, work on my swirl plate for my plane (Ive installed the wheel pants and ram air and have had to monkey with the carburation some) but aroun 130pm the weather started to clear up so we took off and left the pattern on his beginning leg to Atlanta. He was ahead of me but I soon caught up (I have about 30mph on him) we compared numbers, took a couple in flight photos before he headed north. What FUN! Why in the world did I take so long to get this thing finished? You guys have to hurry...be safe but keep things simple. One of the most interesting things we discussed was the fact of how much KR builders try to squeeze every ounce of speed, economy and cost out of these little planes. More spam cans people fly and accept the numbers without trying to improve them whereas we will modify and change things to improve performance without sacrificing expense. My home is always open to any kr builder flying - or driving - through Valdosta Georgia. Way may discuss an southern fly-in for krs here in the future - dont forget the fly in to William Wynne's Corvair College in two weekends....A great opportunity to show your handiwork and to lend a helping hand. Just bring a good attitude and optimism. Dont foget to vote.....Go BUSH!! Yep, that's exactly what I plan to do, except I'll weld up a little box and bolt it to a "drawbar" that fits inside the receiver that's on my wife's Audi A4. I'll do it early on a Sunday morning to avoid traffic, and she'll probably follow me in my car with the flashers going. The airport is only a few miles, and mostly on backroads from here. I'm still a ways away though. Today I'll try to put the wings on and start rigging the ailerons and do a final weight and balance, as well as start to align the landing gear with the wings on it. I've said that before though... I moved it to 8 inches forward of leading edge to correct it. Also need to remember that flex in the gear leg from a heavy landing can allow the pants to hit the tube especially with large tyres (5.00x5) fitted...I learnt this the hard way. You can fine tune your airspeed with an O-ring on the static tube either before or after the little hole but it also affects altitude and VSI to a minor extent. The last "flyer" suggested using red rtv to seal firewall pass through shields. FWIW I think there may be much better products available?? The highest temperature rating that I've seen for high temp rtv is only about 550 F. which is a long way from the 2000 F that the firewall is supposed to resist. When exposed to a propane torch it does not last very long. I have also experimented with fire rated silicone caulk (DAP FireStop) and found that it is about the same as rtv, which is not too surprising. The consensus on the aeroelectric list is to use 3M fire barrier CP25WB+ which is a latex based itumescent fire barrier. When exposed to heat, this stuff expands to insulate and keep an opening sealed. It is available for about US$9. in American Home Depots but in Canada I had to go to a 3M supplier who charged about $22. When I open the tube I'll compare it to rtv but I expect it to be much better. I think some Rona Cashway stores may stock this product in Canada for a more reasonable price. Ken This subject was dealt with in detail on the Bearhawk list last summer and among other key info, this coverage by electrical guru Bob Nuckolls showed up too. http://www.aeroelectric.com/articles/Firewall_Penetration/firewall.html Firewall 2000 is sold by ASS and Leavens has something similar too.
