It was going for an insanely good price, so off I went to have a look. The plane was quite nice, but not what I was looking for, unfortunately. The owner has just finished a really great looking amphibian, so now wants to get rid of the KR. My visit did raise some questions in my mind, though. 1) Are all KR's that low? This was a tail dragger. And the trailing edge of the wings couldn't have been more than a few inches off the ground. Those legs looked awfully short. From what I can see in pictures on the web, KR's aren't exactly tall machines, but they seemed higher. Has the design changed since back then? It is about 15 years old. 2) It was powered by a 1700 VW conversion, which the owner (an aero engineer) said produced about 45 - 50hp, and he ventured that claims of 80 - 90hp for VW conversions were over-rated. Thoughts on this? While it wasn't what I was looking for, I came away stoked. I've now seen a KR in the flesh, and I liked what I saw. I am certainly gaining confidence in my ability to build a plane. One thing the owner mentioned was that the new AS5048 airfoil wings were a significant improvement over the old design. How much better are they, in fact? I was thinking of getting the Diel wings, because I figured better to have the most critical part of the aircraft (1) CORRECT and (2) finished by the time I came along... Again, your thoughts on these matters? Duncan ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 18:23:39 +1200 From: Duncan Subject: KR> Spins? The Robin on which I've done all my flying has great difficulty recovering from a spin, and I live in quiet nervousness when I'm flying. I watch my airspeed like a hawk. It would be nice to fly a plane which can at least recover from a spin if necessary. To: KRnet Message-ID: <20040710070637.78922.qmail@web40910.mail.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Duncan, A speed brake is a door that sticks out into the air-flow and creates a lot of drag helping slow the plane on landing (hopefully). KRs are slick little planes and need something to get the speed down once you're near enough to the ground to land. I learned to fly in a C-152 and I assure you there is no comparison to a KR. None. If you want to pull the nose on a 152 up you have to PULL on the yoke. In a KR you THINK about pulling on the stick. One of the early KR-1 builders said he could fly his plane by moving his head. I believe him. That said, LOTS of people have become quite comfortable flying them and swear by them. Sounds like you might not be in the US, so it might be difficult for you to get to the 'Gathering' in September. I would highly recommend anyone who wants to know more about KRs to go to the Gathering. You will get to meet a lot of great people, many of whom will become your life-long friends. The best way to find out if the KR is the plane for you, is to get a ride in one. As soon as you can. Keep looking. Later builders installed longer, fixed-gear and some used larger wheels, setting the plane (and prop) further from the earth, making it look bigger and much easier to see around the airplane patch. You can see several different types in Mark Langford's photos at his site. There are a few on my photo albums (links below) as well. In fact, come to think of it, most questions about the KR can be answered by reading through Mark Langford's site. You can find it by following links on any of his posts, or putting something like "Aircraft+Rand-Robinson+KR+Langford" in your search engine. Was it a retract? In fact they are very low. The KR does sit low to the ground, but now most have a fixed conventional or tri-gear. Look at Mark Jones site. That doesn't look very low. 2) It was powered by a 1700 VW conversion, which the owner (an aero engineer) said produced about 45 - 50hp, and he ventured that claims of 80 - 90hp for VW conversions were over-rated. I agree and think it is closer to 60 to 80 with 80 being a real stretch. We are talking 2180VW. If you are talking about the type IV, you can easily get 80 to 90. Go to http://www.vw-engines.com/ and http://www.gpasc.com for a lot of information on VW engines. 3) One thing the owner mentioned was that the new AS5048 airfoil wings were a significant improvement over the old design. How much better are they, in fact? I was thinking of getting the Diel wings You can't have Diehl wings and the AS5048. Dan makes only the RAF48. I believe that the new wing is a beautiful thing and has a lot of benefits, but I also believe, that because it is a Laminar wing, it will much more precision to build. Let's shoot for the largest attendance ever along with the most KR's ever. I am getting the fever and bet the rest of you are too. >Mark Jones (N886MJ) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++= GO, GO, GO!!!!!!!!!!! Good job Mark. Let's start working up the crowd. If anyone wants to bring items for sale we'll find a place to do that. Speaking of Gathering, I spent all day yesterday in meetings with the airport manager, tourism folks, and the caterer, trying to get the plans for the Gathering finalized. But first the exciting part of the day. I was traveling the interstate on my way to Mt.Vernon and just 30 minutes after I passed the airport where my hangar is located a coal train fell off the tracks on a nearby overpass. It dropped seven railroad cars and nearly a million pounds of coal on the interstate below closing both lanes. A miracle no one was killed or seriously injured. That spot sees 100,000 cars a day pass by. My trip to Mt.Vernon took approx 50 minutes, the trip home took nearly two hours. Within an hour of the accident the highways surrounding the site for 20 miles were choked with traffic. Some points had seven mile backups. It was going to take as long as 24 hours to clean up the site and get the road open again. Gathering info: Gathering activities will take place on the ramp just outside the main terminal area. Seminars will be held inside the terminal in a large conference room so NO noise or interruptions and with a good sound setup everyone should be able to hear and get the most from the time spent. Go to www.krgathering.org and see the schedule for the seminars. I'm planning the busiest schedule of any Gathering I've attended and seminars will be dependent on the presenters making the journey. We'll do our best to send everyone home with all of their questions answered. I may have mentioned eariler that I had everything set up with the on-airport resturant and then they closed their doors. I've now arranged to have a Friday and Saturday lunch (buffett) available right in the terminal commons area for (approx.) $7.25 per person. The Saturday night banquet will also be held in the terminal commons area. It is scheduled for 7:00pm. Those arriving in motorhomes or campers will have an area to park just a short walk from the terminal. I'm going to GUESS that maybe four or five units can be accomidated. MAYBE a 110vac plugin will be the ONLY service available. Just a short walk farther is a pavilion by a small lake where tents will be allowed. There are picnic tables and , I think, two fire pits. There are plenty of off-airport camping facilities available for those that want them. I've tried to balance the seminar and KR drool time so you should be able to leave with lots of information and plenty of motivation. My only real concern at this point is hangar space for KR's to overnight. Last year when I agreed to host there was plenty of large hangar space. The airport got busy in the last nine months and is using much of the space now but management is very supportive and we'll find room somewhere. Let's hope the weather Gods smile on this years event and everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. Supppose one cell of one battery shorts internally. This happens frequently with automotive batteries. The one battery then becomes a 10 Volt battery and the other one will send an extremely high current to that battery which can actually cause that battery to explode. In order to prevent this you would have to put a large diode in series with each battery to prevent either battery from discharging into the other. Those diodes are big, get hot and need heatsinks. Talk to the RV people. And then there is the problem of charging the batteries because the alternator cannot put charging current back thru the diodes. Series connecting two 6 Volt batteries is the only way if you want to use two batteries. If the one is extremely far from the other, you can always use a slightly heavier cable for that one. I adjusted it when I installed it and haven't had to touch it again. I adjusted mine without the engine running but if you have engine noise you'll have to adjust with the engine started. The S is squelch and the other I think is for brightness or something. Turn the S (probably counterclockwise) until you get background noise and then the opposit direction to silence, just like a squelch knob on any other radio. Just make sure you adjust while no signal is being received (no one talking). Using a close but unused frequency will make the job easier. Good luck. Those are great radios. To: Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello Netter's Rich Seifert, Rich Shirley, and I had a great day of flying. Clear blue skies, cool temp, (at least in the morning), and smooth air. We did a mini cross country to work on our formation flying for the trip back to the Gathering. We flew by Revemaster and on up to Apple Valley for breakfast. Good food, slooooowwwwwww service. Overall, a definite 10 for flying days. I think the Richards and I are going to plan one or two overnight trips before the Big One just for practice. I have had 2 oil leaks that have plagued me for months. It appears I may have to pull my heads befire the trip back. The other is at the oil pump cover. I am using the Revmaster style with the vertical oil filter in front of #1 cylinder. Has anyone had any problems with the assembly leaking, ALOT, at the opposite end of the filter where the large nut is? I think is is to adjust the flow??? Heck, I don't know. Anyway, any assistance would be appreciated. I added a few knots of airspeed by the recent addition of wheel pants and gear leg fairings. I still need to finish the inside fairing over the gear leg and brake assembly. I should have them finished this next week. I had the gear leg fairings completed before I went to the Golden West EAA Fly-in in Marysville, Calif. It is about a 400 mile trip. The first time I went up I needed to stop for fuel. With the new wing tank I made it non-stop in under 3 hours. Golden West was a pretty nice event. It is really tuning into a nice show for the west coast. I was the only KR present but seemed to be well received. A number of people who came by said they either owned plans but had never seen one, had never seen one but now wanted to build it, or were currently building but now were more motivated after seeing a flying one. In fact, the #2 guy running the Golden West show, I wish I could remember his name, said he also was currently building one up near Sacramento. Bottom line is, we need to get these things out to the local events. I was suprised by how many people have never seen a KR even though they have been around aviation all thier lives. We have a great little airplane with alot of bang for the buck. I looked at a few "Plans Built" (NOT!) planes at the show who had almost three times as much money in their planes....and mine is still faster :)~ See ya all in September! If this is all that is meant by the KR2's pitch sensitivity, then my worries are over as far as this is concerned. Or is the KR2's flight characteristics more sinister than this? Duncan, i have not flown a KR-2 yet, hopefully there is somebody at Oshkosh you may give me an opportunity. I did, however, get my training on a Jodel-Robin DR-300, which I suppose is a little heavier, but otherwise similar to the R2130. Later on I also flew different Cessna models - 172, 182 and 206, and none of them were comparable in sensitivity to the DR-300. Also, although a tri-gear, the DR-300 had a tendency to float, and float and float ..., If the engine was not pulled back to fully idle, it would go in ground effect forever. The best way to land the aircraft was to get close to the ground and slowly pull all speed out of it, until the stall-warning came on the bird nicely settled down. After that i could put a Cessna on the spot, because it did land like a brick. I am hoping that the KR-2 will fly as sensitive as the DR-300. Alhtough I indeed had to keep my hand at the stick at all times, it was a pleasure to fly. Very easy, very responsive, and I am looking forward to get something similar once I am done. BTW: Who is coming to Oshkosh? I know, i know, I should come to the gathering, but I will not be able to make it then due to some family appointments around that time. Maybe next year. I'll bet it's not much different than Oshkosh, mileage wise. The air was quite smooth at 3500 feet so I did some "hand off the stick" test. On one attempt I was able to take my hand off the stick for a full 30 seconds (timed with my watch) before it started to wander off and I had to grip the stick. I did cheat a bit with some side to side head bobbing and a few sholder wiggles. That's the longest I've been able to release the stick and challenge other KR fliers to beat that time. I once made a flight in the Tripacer just after sundown and was able to fly hands off the yoke for 25 minutes. I did a forward and back lean for altitude correction and very slight rudder inputs for direction and wings level. I even made the decent into the airport hands off the yoke. I finally had to grip the yoke after trying to rudder a turn into a left downwind. A company in England is offering these complete with gears and everything. The interesting part is a centrifugal clutch, that allows the prop to freely spin when the engine is off. The address is: http://www.microlightsport.co.uk/Catalogue/bmwengine.htm Also, I stumbled across a German webpage from a school for A&E Mechanics in Munich, that has modified a small three cylinder Diesel engine from VW. Looking at the latest developments coming from VW and Audi, these could be interesting in the close future. Audi just released a 1.4 liter 3 cylinder turbo charged and direct injected diesel engine, that develops about 90 HP. The engine block is aluminum, and to my knowledge the engine weight is way under 100 kg. The real intersting part is, that the engine develops a torque of about 215 Nm (about 165 ft.lb.) from 1900 to abot 3000 rpm. This would make it ideal for a direct driven machine. I will try to get more information fromt the German school about their work, anybody who is interested may mail me directly.
