The winds were light and/or right down the runway. I've logged time in a Cessna 150, 172, 172XP, 177, 182, Piper Cherokee 140, 180, the 180 with the tapered wing, Tripacer, Colt, Super Decathalon, and flown in Champs, Taylorcrafts, Mooneys, Bananzas, Cubs, ultralights, Ercoupes, Aztecs, and more, but I think my KR is as exciting to fly and capable of making the best landings of anything I've flown. With little or no wind it flares and settles on smoother than any airplane I've ever experienced !!! It flares beautifully, slows and settles on with the wheels just starting to roll on the asphalt. AWSOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you get your project flying you'll kick yourself for taking so long to build.......... I taxied the full length of the runway with the new extention at the local airport yesterday, about 1.2 miles from the terminal. It was the same direction as my intended route of flight. Nearing the end I called ground control. "Ground, 1LF, it's hard for me to see over the nose. Is this next exit the Benton exit" ? "1LF, Ground, negative, continue taxi". Larry Flesner - 113.7 hours and the grin keeps getting bigger !!! ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 16:41:06 GMT From: "Jeff Scott" Subject: Re: KR> Get it finished !! I've flown a lot of light planes, but few as much fun to fly as my KR. 485+ hours and counting on this KR. Following a flight in it last night, I commented to another pilot that if the FAA knew how much fun this plane is to fly, they would make it illegal. For those lacking motivation, if you only knew... My concern is just how safe are PVC fuel tanks. I'm also a member of the FLY5K Yahoo list. There was a very active discussion there on just how long PVC would last as a fuel tank. A plastics engineer on that list contends that PVC will become soft over time and eventually fail as a fuel container. When I did a Google search on PVC and gasoline the data seemed to suggest that hydrocarbons are bad for PVC. My question, "Is PVC a suitable fuel tank material or not?" My concern is the stability of the PVC over time when used this way. Thanks in advance ... Denny --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - 250MB free storage. Do more. Gavin, My Diehl bracket runs 45 degrees down from the firewall and is approximately 6" long on the bottom side and 7.5" long on the top side (a 45 degree weld to the mounting plate). The engine mount supports attach 0.75" OC from the end of the bracket tube and reach up to the lower engine attach points (designed for a VW mount, although I'm sure it could be easily adapted to an O200 mount). You can see pics on my site. I hope that helps. My brake will lower to near 90 degrees and I run it full down every landing. I use it on every landing and would hate to be without it. It allows me to lower the nose a bit and gives me enough drag that I can carry a bit of power which seems to stabilize the approach. I have only made two approaches in the several hundred landings now with the speed brake not deployed. One was my first approach on my first flight and another at about the 50 hour mark to see how it landed. It lands (flare to touchdown) the same, with or without, but speed control with the brake deployed is much easier and I can have a pretty nose down approach for good over the nose visibility. The brake gives me an additional 300+ fpm decent with the same airspeed and helps to steepen the approach. The KR just seems a bit more stable on approach when I can carry a bit of power. I'm guessing here but I probably carry about 1200 to 1400 rpm on approach (0-200) , much the same as you would land a C-150 with about 20 degree flaps. I hold 80mph on final and with little or now wind, especially gusts, and try to slow to 70 over the numbers. If I didn't have the speed brake these numbers would probably be 5 to 10 mph too fast. On shorter grass runways I try to nail 70 on short final and then let it settle into the grass without holding it off too long. The grass slows it down pretty fast. What a hoot!!!! The additional drag of a speed brake would be nice for better speed control on final, but I don't consider it to be necessary.
