My wife also got me back into flying after a hiatus of 17 years. In fact, she didn't even know I used to fly until we'd been married 3 years. When the discussion came up a few years ago about reducing the wing incidence I was right at the stage of glueing the spars to the fuselage. I decided to wait and see what the outcome was. I happen to get a ride in a Kolb ultralight at OSH in '93 which stuck in my mind. In '98, while bs'ing with my neighbor about being able to fly an ultralight off his 800' deep pasture, he said, "Mow 'er down!" I asked my wife if we could put the KR on a back burner and get an ultralight. She said, "Only if it's a two place." I got a Challenger (N142JL) which we built in 250 to 300 hours, put up a hanger at our house and fly from my neighbor's pasture that butts up to our back yard. One of these days I'll get back to the KR but I've had a whole lot of fun with the Challenger the past 4+ years! :-) I don't think I could ever go back to an airport after having my plane right out my back door. The KR will have to wait until we get a bigger piece of land. But the aft spar feels kinda flimsy to me !! The main spar has no movement at all but when I flex the rear spar at the tip it seems to flex quite a bit and doesn't feel at all like it'll take much of the lifting forces. Does this sound quite normal?? It seems to me that the rear spar will mainly take the fore to aft loads encountered from wing drag. You are correct. The rear spar is mainly there to keep the wing from folding backwards...."to take the moment", and was not designed or expected to do a lot of the lifting, so it can be a little flimsy vertically. Some wings don't even have rear spars, but in that case the main spar is located a little further aft. Rear spar breakage in a KR is not something to lose any sleep over... We're talking a LOT of weight here, especially if you're thinking of mounting a pair of Covair engines on that puppy! The holes for the engine mounts would be quite a bit larger than those used for the WAF's. That makes the spar fairly thin above and below it. Just an observation; not a criticism. Was it my neighbors playing one of their tricks?, Or could it be Yellow Freight with a shipment from Wicks? The landing lights shining on the new-fallen snow Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below, When I thought: “Could it be?… Yes” It was a small airplane, a KR-2S, With a big fat pilot, gloved hand on the stick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick, Stuffed with presents, and painted in white, Still not over gross, he must have built light, Speeding by in a high-speed pass, He shouted “Kraut get off of your ass!” “Langford and Jones, Bruce, Cooper, and Rainey, Heath, and the rest ‘ya”, “Get those planes done and come join Larry Flesner!” Now belly board down as he rounded the base, Full stop on my roof, done with such grace, He slid down my chimney, all covered with soot, Wearing his sanding mask, man this cats good. He was wearing a gathering shirt, two thousand and three, Dried epoxy on his jeans, and holes at the knee, There was something magical about him, and the way he flew in, Could not quite place it…, Ahh, he had the big KR grin! He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, Dropped a big bundle of spruce near the tree, by the hearth, A Corvair core motor, foam and glass, A new Sterba prop, this guy has class! Then laying his finger on the side his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose He gave the KR a quick preflight, Before he took off into the night, Did one high speed pass with a Marty Roberts pull up, This old man can fly just like a young pup! And away he flew, right out of sight, As I heard him exclaim “Merry Christmas to all, and I REALLY HATE SANDING!!” Brian Kraut Engineering Alternatives, Inc. www.engalt.com ------------------------------ Message: 21 Date: Fri, 24 Dec 2004 19:34:08 +0000 From: Steven Phillabaum Subject: Re: Re: KR> Spars To: KRnet Message-ID: <3k70j8$jps7af@mxip17a.cluster1.charter.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Bill Clapp told me a story of a gentleman whom flew to a gathering in his KR and after landing was shocked when another person asked if he commonly flew without wing attachment bolts in his rear spar. Today, Christmas, once all the family stuff is out of the way this morning, I plan on going to the airport doing a Weight and Balances, some taxiing and maybe even a flight. (I did 2 hours of circuits yesterday in a tail dragger to get in the "ZONE" ready for today) Merry Christmas Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://users.tpg.com.au/barryk/KR2.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike Turner To: KRnet Sent: Saturday, December 25, 2004 7:14 AM Subject: Re: KR> Christmas eve at the airport ----- Original Message ----- From: paulwasp@webtv.net To: KRnet Sent: Friday, December 24, 2004 1:34 PM Subject: Re: KR> Christmas eve at the airport Hi; You're a poet....
