A couple of years ago I did some research and found Dynel was used in kayaks, but they also gave up on it as it tends to hold too much epoxy and get too heavy. That's all I know about Dynel. I recently you got an e-mail with an attachment that looks like it came from me (Frank Ross) over the KRnet about Winglets. It didn't come from me. I hope nobody opened it. Somewhere a virus has gotten into a KRnet member's address book and is sending bogus e-mails again. I'm not on KRnet anymore but enjoy reading the Digest and keeping up with what everyone's doing. Just got on briefly to send this note about Dynel and the bogus E-mail and wish everyone well. Remember the SWRFI at New Braunfels, Texas is May 14-15 and will be a great one. The thing started out as more of a 'What If...' rather than a 'Can Do.' (Get Stu to tell you about the radar domes.) I don't think he had a hundred bucks in the whole project when he realized the strength-to-weight was coming out well enough to carry a human, albeit a small one. Can't we just measure the height or >the aileron spar at the inb'd and outb'd spar ends and machine the spars to that >dimension? Ray Goree +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Yes you can but the height was not my problem. The aileron has the same "washout" (twist) as the wing and I installed my aileron spar on a flat table and clamped the aileron to the table. That removed the "washout" from the aileron and when I installed the wing on the KR, when the outboard end of the aileron matched the wing the inboard end was off and when the inboard end matched the outboard was off. I'm talking the trail edge of the aileron not matching the trail edge of the wing. That's when I cut the aileron skin just behind the spar on one side for about 2/3rd of the aileron, clamped both ends to match, floxed the cut and later reglassed. I hoped for - and received answers from folks that have actually worked with the stuff. The short story is that it is not stronger, crappy to sand (even if you are singing the song) and produces heavier results. The cost issue is a non-starter - input from Kevin Angus is terrific - go look at (http://johnrsweet.com/Polyester.html) - Dynel now costs about the same as glass cloth of similar weight. Another great URL from Kevin - http://www.auromat.com/auromat_eng.htm - I cannot wait to run some trials with this stuff (2.5mm plywood substitute) Regards Steve J Africa I essence: Orma sez: = I originally started using Dynel and found it un-acceptable - dropped a screw driver from waist high and it went though the wing skin Harold Woods sez = It is not as strong as you are lead to believe. = One layer of boat cloth (6oz) is far stronger than 1 layer of dynel. = You can tear a layer of finished dynel - not do the same with glass. = Dynel looks thin - fuzes out requiring much more epoxy to cover it. = adds unneaded weight = Dynel has a very slippery property - try sanding - you will curse it. Dick Hartwig Waunakee sez: = easy to work with - formed well to compound curves = on the bias (45%angle) it would conform to a tighter corner than fiberglass = did fuzz up when the epoxy was applied - did sand out OK. = The big problem with it is weight - absorbs a lot of epoxy = I will guar-awn-tee the dynel structure will be heavier. R.S.Hoover Sez: (I saw a guy called Bob Hoover do a dead-stick loop and roll in a Shrike Commander - South Africa 1977) = Kenny used Dynel because it was free - nuff said - RIP Unka Don Sez: = The word on Dynel - .. it soaks up resin like a sponge - final layup will be significantly heavier than glass. = final surface is not as nice and needs more work (read sanding). Mark Jones (The enthusiastic one according to aunt Glynnis) sez: "go look in the archives". He is right. I did try that first but somehow could not get any joy. Larry F: (the lovely man according to aunt Glynnis) is talking like all the other guys who have already cracked it - his bird is in the air and looking great - so they make laid-back funnies - mostly about weight and performance. John Kerry sez: It is a great product - terrible stuff to use. ------------------------------ Message: 12 Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2004 11:06:11 -0500 From: "Pat Driscoll" Subject: KR> Starters To: "KR Mailing list" Message-ID: <001501c42628$3c7ba520$d40a5292@oemcomputer> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" FYI. It was a great show and we had four KRs show up. Steve Jones had the well deserved best auto engine conversion award. It is good to see a KR in the winers circle. I think it has been a while since a KR has won. ------------------------------ Message: 21 Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2004 22:31:57 EDT From: FIXERJONES@aol.com Subject: KR> Re: n212kr , the weekend,,,,,,,, To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <143.26f170cb.2db5e59d@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" wow,,what a weekend,! i had sooooo much fun with N212KR at SNF. i didn;t expect to be interviewed by BUD with the EAA mag. fri morn. before i could get tied down & regestered. He was very nice& said he knew ken way back then. after talking to bud for almost an hour, he instructed me where & when to be at the pilot breafing for the air to air photo shoot. fiannly i get to go to register the plane for judging& pay for admittance& then get to finally hit the potty. I was floatin,,By then i was ready for lunch. after lunch, it was off to the pilot breafing filling out paper work&going thru with 10 or so others fixin up time slots & explaining the in's & out's of the formation flyin to get the shots they need. almost 2 hrs later i get out, only enough time to see parts mart a little( our eaa chapter runs it) & some food for supper& off i go to the flight line lookin for a gas truck so i can fuel up & meet the photo plane for take off @ 5:45. So off we go into the wild blue yander to 8500 ft. & start the close& i mean close formation flyin & snappin lots of shots,,about 20 min wourth. all done& i peel off to the south west home to VNC. that day i talked to a lot of kr guys from the net,@ a lot of others who have kr's& built& building kr's & a couple who crashed kr"s ( and there still around to talk about it!) oh,yea, by the way i found out tonite about the best auto conv. ac award ,i got a tropy& plack coming :-) this is just part of the whole ordeal over the weekend , but i can't type & this took quite a while, wew, I want to thank everyone on the KR net for all of there input to creating the info for all to use& you all are a great bunch!
