The seal then wears excessively and has no life. This is not a wear problem exclusive to any one engine, but virtually every engine I have ever worked on, at one point or another. 3rd possibility is that you have insufficient lubrication of the seal when installing which before it seats it wears excessively. Also typically the surface where the seal rides must be polished in order to re-new the surface for good seal life and wear. ++++++++++++++ One more possibility is some existing damage (scuff or tool marks) to the crank that wears out the seal in the time mentioned. Have a good look next time. I really hated to sell it but I'm not really making any progress on it and I think after I pay a few things off I'll just buy one that is already flying. Does anyone know anything about the KR that is listed on barnstormers that is in pensacola Flordia? If so I've thought about buying that one. I'll be sure to let William Wright know about the KR net so he can get all the awnsers he may want to know. Every one on the net has been such a great help for various reasons. Seems crazy but today's metalurgy is alot better than before so it behaves in some strange ways. Occurred on a late model Toyota Tacoma truck with the new double overhead cam engine. The angle of incidence is one of the factors effecting the fuselage orientation to the relative wind, BUT not the only one. In the little KR it possible for the incidence to be correct, but with an aft CG as is so common with them, you are already applying alot of down stick to hold the nose down, which is producing supplemental lift at the tail, which makes for even lower angle of attack or even more nose down. Even in larger aircraft like the Piper Seminole, the flight attitude is very different when we have people in the back seat, over when we fly with just 2 up front. Commercial aircraft use these principles to their advantage to fly faster and farther, but limits must be respected. We have less area to play and still stay safe. You could set you incidence angle to 0 degrees and if you have a rearward CG may still find yourself cruising nose down due to the other factors of aerodynamics present. Just as building a successful engine for a particular application is a coordinated package, so is the design of an aircraft. The whole package needs to coordinated for best results. Also be careful of changing the amount of washout on the wings. This determines among other things where the stall begins first on the wing. If you have a KR2 without flaps, and full span ailerons, it is not as big a deal, but if you move the ailerons outboard as Mark L did to make room for flaps and such, then it will make a difference. If the stall begins equally out and inboard, or more out then in, the stall can be more abrupt by the time you really feel it, and loss of aileron authority will happen sooner. This can make control very sticky at the stall. More importantly it will make the control just prior to the stall more difficult, since the aileron relative wind is now more turbulent than the inboard wing root. Changing the diehedral will cause an associated loss in stability laterally. The diehedral has a way of making the CG sit lower between the wings causing the stabilizing effect of a pendulum hanging below the wing, used very successfully by the high wing crowd. It will also reduce the wing clearance available during cross wind landings, bringing the tip closer to the ground when banked into the wind. With the shorter geared KRs out there this is a big deal, especially the retracts. Just some thoughts while waiting on the FAA...... Shortly after my last diatribe, a couple of people emailed me privately to assure me that screwups from AS&S were "isolated incidents" and that they'd never had any problems. I wish I could say that too! Saturday I recieved a cryptic notice in the mail from AS&S. It had "please return this portion with your remittance" stamped at the top in red ink, but after a few minutes of studying the thing, I deduced that I didn't actually owe them any money, they were just informing me that indeed they were going to send me one of the ten things I'd ordered. Whew...that's a relief! I wonder about the rest? Today I came home to a message from AS&S asking me to please call them and talk to their customer service folks. Apparently somebody forwarded them my email message, and they wanted to smooth things over. I'm not sure what they plan to say, but I assure you that no words will help convince me of anything other than the place is in total chaos, and it's a miracle that people ever actually recieve things they order from them. I called, waited 8 minutes for a human to answer (I'll bet I've never had to wait more than 8 SECONDS for people at Wicks to answer), and was told she was "unavailable, call back later". I called back an hour later, and she's "stepped out to the warehouse". I'm still waiting on her to return my call. So I find a UPS box on the back porch, along with a Priority Mail envelope. N56ML stickers are in the envelope, some other stuff in the box. I'm clueless as to why they couldn't have both come in the same box, but then I'm not a logistics expert. A careful examination of the box shows that the position sensor (the thing that forced me to order from them in the first place) WASN'T EVEN IN THE BOX! Why does that not surprise me? Because the guy in CA told me he had one, but they didn't have one in GA, but the next week they told me that everything I wanted was in GA, and they'd ship it. Not only was it not in the box, it wasn't even on the invoice. And two trim indicator labels that WERE on the invoice, and I was charged for, were also NOT in the box. Hmm, another isolated incident I guess, but for me, this is typical of any order I've placed with AS&S. I just can't fathom how flawlessly Wicks does their job, never skipping a beat, after several hundred orders from me, and when I place one order a year with AS&S, it invaribly turns into some kind of fiasco. So AS&S just called, explaining that there must have been a computer glitch or something, but that they were sure it was just an isolated incident. To me, that's about four or five "isolated incidents" in one order, so I'm not convinced! Supposedly they will now ship my position sensor from CA, along with the two missing labels. We'll see. So let's recap: -it took them 20 minutes to tell me that they had something in stock -they made me "confirm" by email or fax something that I'd ordered, like maybe I wasn't sure? -they told me it was all in stock, but on Monday they called to say the switches were backordered -they were supposed to ship it all on Monday, 3 day UPS red, but simply forgot to EVER ship it -they sent me an invoice telling me the thing I'd confirmed, was actually going to ship -the one thing I REALLY wanted, they left out of the box, and off the invoice -two more items were also not in the box, but I was charged for them anyway -a three day order has now turned into a THIRTEEN day order Yep, I know....I'm just a malcontent. Sorry for ventilating in your direction. Whoever forwarded that last one to Jim Irwin is welcome to do that again. It's been a while since I talked to him about this kind of stuff anyway, and it looks like he could use another ear full... Don't even get me started on them again! I'll bet you that you will have major problems over the items not in the box that were on the invoice. They will swear up and down that it was in there and that you lost it. The only way I was able to prove to the Jim Irwin (pres of AS&S) was the shipping weights on the box. The weight was on the invoice match the box as I got it, with out all of the crap they forgot to send. Hum! No kidding! I can't believe that they are still around. It must be because most people give up and never resolve there issues and never get there money back. Thats a 100 % mark up for AS&S if they sale something and never delver it. I have had several conversations with Jim Irwin via email, on the phone with the assents and his costumer service manager. It is very clear to me that they spend no time what so ever on the floor or there company and probably only know what's going on though meetings in some plush office with leather chairs and conference calls. They have no clue of how inefficient their company is operating and what kind of profits they are wasting not to mention the people like me who will never return as a customer because I get ripped of on a regular basis by them. ------------------------------ Message: 24 Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 19:53:51 -0400 From: Boeing757mech1@aol.com Subject: Re: KR> yet another AS&S debacle... Speaking of needing a nap, you know you're getting old when the motel you spent the second night of your honeymoon in is now an "assisted living home for the elderly". I saw the place today and aged 40 years in a single drive-by. :-) Larry Flesner ------------------------------ Message: 26 Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 20:14:00 -0500 From: "Oscar Zuniga" Subject: KR> KR Gathering web page To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Larry writes- >Bob Lee is maintaining the KR Gathering web page and deserves a big THANK >YOU. It's just not incrementing, that's all ;o) And just to contribute something KR-ish, it seems like only yesterday but it was a few short years ago (1999? 2000?) that Paul Martin completed conversion of his taildragger KR2 to tri-gear and started taxi tests on it. What fun! After seeing Paul's plane with its guts ripped out, cowling, fuel tank, instrument panel, engine, lots of other things dismantled and in boxes, holes cut open here and there, filled and sanded/primered splotches all over... I never thought it would fly again but it did. Those of you who have your airplanes in pieces or wingless or engineless, take hope! We watched Paul taxi the little KR behind its 1835 VW and eventually fly, carry passengers (me, for one), make cross-countries, and have a ball. Never the prettiest bird on the field but sort of like an older sports car, lots of fun to fly. It CAN be done! Always figure worst case. Sooner or > later > it WILL happen. > > Larry Flesner > Larry, I guess this begs the question of what is minimum fuel. I will have about 2 1/2 gal at 1/4 tank indicated. Just over 1 1/2 gal when the low fuel warning light comes on, and none when the engine quits. Or it could be useable reserve for a half hour of flight after my destination which may equate to some where around 4 gal. Not trying to be wise but I don't know my actual fuel burn at full power yet. But I did want to complete fuel flow testing while I'm set up for it. The other parameter that no one really commented on was the 12.5 deg nose up attitude. That puts the rudder about 1 1/2 inches off the ground. Is that a reasonable climb attitude to test at?
