Don't phone in orders, just use the online ordering, trouble free. If mixtures are correct you could possibly be gapped too large making it hard to start hot due to lean mixture extra resistance. Many builders that I know have been in this ball park. The speeds mentioned are pretty honest for the size engine installed and weight of aircraft. Climb or cruise prop? Totally stock engine? I believe the 1700CC refers to the stock 1680 CC bug engine. If true, then converting to 1800 cc piston/cylinders would be a simple task. REMEMBER, homebuilts are works in progress, almost never completed. The fotos indicate nice workmanship. Did i miss something on the engine,...like a carb heat box?? A little ram air into that carb might improve things also. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank van der Hulst (Staff WG)" To: Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 2004 5:50 PM Subject: KR> Advice sought on buying a KR-2 Hi, I'm new to this list and to KRs (but have just sold an RV-6 project I'd been working on for 10 years). I'd appreciate some advice/opinions/thoughts on a KR-2 I'm considering buying. Here's the ad: "Rand KR2 homebuilt 65 hrs Total Time Airframe and Engine 100 Kts Cruise on 2.5 GPH Ian Henry Prop VW powered, dual ignition, twin plug heads and carb heat. Narco Com 11a radio Ameriking ELT" Some photos can be seen at http://www.saa.org.nz/modules.php?name=ZClassifieds&file=detail&cat=9&de =34 I've emailed the owner a couple of times, and got a whole lot more details. I'm mostly concerned about two things: low airspeeds and high weights... He says that it cruises at 100kts (115mph) at 3000+RPM and 2.5GPH, and maximum speed is 115kts (132mph). The engine is a 1700 Type 3 VW, good for about 50hp. Secondly, he describes the empty weight as "600+lbs", and useful load as "370+"lbs. That adds up to a max gross of over 970lbs. I've spent a couple of days researching KR-2's on the Net and listening in to this list, and this just seems awfully slow and awfully heavy for a KR-2. So, my questions: 1. Is this plane particularly slow? 2. Is this plane particularly heavy? 3. If it is slow, then why? My thoughts include some combination of: 1. 50hp just ain't enough (what the vendor is suggesting) 2. The prop is too short or needs re-pitching 3. The heavy weight 4. High drag a. Wings have been lengthened by 8" b. a slightly taller-than-usual canopy to accomodate a 6'2" pilot c. No gear leg or wheel fairings d. The bottom of the cowl has some squarish mouldings on it (I guess to clear the carb) e. Improper rigging perhaps As I said, I'd appreciate thoughts/opinions/ideas from KR-2 owners -- how good or bad is this plane? It really is good, especially when you are ordering a bunch of parts like nuts and bolts. It is quick and easy, the descriptions come up so you can verify that you entered the correct part number, you can see if the parts are in stock, and if they are in stock in the same warehouse so you can make quick deletions and sustitutions if necessary, and you can look over the complete order to make sure it is correct. You can also log back on ad check the order on their status screen and get tracking numbes when parts ship. All yor orders also stay on their web site so you can review old orders later if you need to. I have probably done over 50 online orders with them and never had a problem. The only problems I have had with Spruce is a phone order when I received 20 Curtis quick drain valves instead of two of them which they took right off my credit card and sent me a UPS call tag to return the extras and I had one fitting that was missing the nut and they sent me a whole new fitting the next day with no questions asked. I have no complaints about Wicks either. I think some people just have a catalog ordering curse. What happens is that they sign up using their email address of somethingorother@netzero.com, but get a message like "sorry, but you have to be a member of the list to post to it". That's because netzero puts your RETURN address in as somethingorother@netzero.NET , and those are two different people as far as the rest of the world is concerned. The cure is that you have to subscribe from BOTH email accounts, and then go into your account (at either http://mylist.net/listinfo/krnet or http://mylist.net/listinfo/corvaircraft )and disable the mail from one of them (I guess the .com one would make sense) so you don't get two copies of every message. You need to know your password, which was in the "welcome to the list" message that you got on day one, or you can get a reminder at the bottom of that same link (which is also printed at the bottom of every message that goes to the lists). I don't know what the zeros at netzero were thinking when they came up with this great idea, but it sure leads to a lot of confusion, and people like JoSandt wanting my head on a platter for barring them from posting to the list... It may be a little heavy, but not out of the ballpark. It has a lot of good stuff with it. I would consider rebuilding the engine into a 1915, (no crank or rod changes necessary), or just replacing it. It is underpowered, unless you like 2.5 gal per hour of all the fun flying you can stand. However, if you were to decide on it, definitely go through the engine as it looks home made which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'll reply to all the responses in this one post. Whilst I'm used to taking anything I find on the Net with a grain of salt, I was mainly concerned over the weight after I read "A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE KR2" By Neil Bingham http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/neilb.html. He suggests that a reasonable max gross would be 880lbs. Which would mean that I could get into the plane, but couldn't actually gas it up. (Do you need 30mins reserve if you just sit on the tarmac and make "Brm Brm" noises without actually starting the engine? :-) The article suggests that they get quite squirrely as the weight goes up. What max gross are most people stating for their KR-2s? How well do they fly when loaded to over (say) 900lbs? I don't know what the prop is... it spins at 3000+RPM at cruise, which suggests to my O-320-oriented mind that it needs to be pitched a bit more coarsely. What's the normal max RPM for a VW aircraft installation (I've seen 3,500 mentioned somewhere)? Yes there is a carb heat box... I think its visible in the engine picture, between the conical air filter and the carb. Regarding "homebuilts are works in progress": I'm happy (maybe even looking forward to!) making mods to try to improve the performance. The vendor isn't the builder. From what he says, the engine is probably stock. But he says its 1700cc *and* a Type 3 engine, which my Net research says doesn't compute (only Type 4 engines were 1700cc or bigger as stock). I'll be asking the vendor for some more information on this. My experience in high-performance aircraft is limited (i.e. about an hour total right-seat in RV-6s), a fairly low-performance KR isn't a problem. For a while. My thinking is to get some hours in the aircraft, then start looking at aerodynamic improvements, and then (when I've got a bit more money) improving horsepower. The article suggests that 80hp is the maximum reasonable power for a KR-2. So, would a Subaru conversion be practical? I realise that this would be a *major* rework, but I feel more comfortable with the idea of 80hp out of a Subaru than out of a VW. I will be asking the vendor "Why only 65 hours?". I did ask about accidents/repairs, and the reponse was "Logged". To be fair, that was one of about 70 questions I asked in a single email. The aircraft was originally built in Zimbabwe then imported to NZ. He also didn't give a year of manufacture, but it was first registered in NZ in 1993. My supposition is that the reason its got so few hours is that he bought it as a damaged aircraft and has repaired it (he's an aircraft engineer) for sale. That perhaps also explains why he's put his own-design landing gear on it. Regarding the "optimistic fuel-burn figures claimed by the vendor": In a phone conversation, he suggested that airspeed figures and weights on the Net are optimistic. I'm taking all figures with a grain of salt. Thanks again for all your input. The PSI information listed on the side of your tires indicates the "cold" pressure rating for the tire; following the manufactures air pressure rating is required for good handling and durability. Note: for every 10 degrees (F) change in ambient temperature; your tire's inflation pressure will change by about 1 psi (up with higher temperatures and down with lower.) The typical difference between summer and winter temperatures is about 50 degrees (F), which results in a loss of about 5 psi and will sacrifice handling and durability. Examples: ascending and descending from colder to warmer climates, rolling your plane out of a heated hanger and flying in the winter. The return line didn't go back to the tank but back to the filter, therfore I also thought it may be a vapor lock. So I spent the nights this week going out to the airpot and modifed the return line to now feed back to the tank. Because I have an electric pump I'm able to circulate the fuel and see any bulbs in my clear tube fuel gauge (that's where I returned the fuel to to). This morning I ran it up and tested with no luck, the rough running still exists (but at least the fuel plumbing is correct now :-). I've put a copy of the engine manual on my WEB page. Next step is to have a tech look at the eclectrics tomorrow. If mixtures are correct you could possibly be gapped too large making it hard to start hot due to lean mixture extra resistance. To remove the old starter mount / housing, I also had to remove the oil sending unit. Therefor, I disconnected the wire at the sender. I noticed in the mean time as I was working on my plane, if I turned the ignition to on, the oil pressure gauge would max out. I think this is normal with the sender disconnected. Anyway, I reinstalled the sender after I made the new mount / housing. I then went to attach the wire and twisted the post right off. Bummer.... I ordered a new $35 sender and it arrived today. I installed it, attached the gauge wire, turned the ignition to on and the gauge immediately maxed out. What's up with that. Is it possible the new sender is bad? Is there a way to test the sender? Some gauges do nothing when disconnected, and you test them by earthing the wire, the gauge usually max out, and that would say the sender unit is stuffed.
