There's also some info on how I made the carb end of the manifold at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/intake.html#update. The short version is that it's now good enough to fly with the prop I have, and I can go back to finishing up the airframe! The only engine details left are carb heat and a breather. Ram air will come AFTER I start flying, so I can tell how much of an improvement it makes. I taxied around in the driveway a little yesterday. My 9 year old daughter, who was in charge of chocks in case I got stuck in a precarious position (our driveway is at an angle, and only 20' wide) eventually ran inside and reported "Mom, Dad almost crashed in the driveway!" That's when I decided I'd install the rudder and the cables to the steerable tailwheel today, rather than depending on the brakes... The Ellison is a sweet match to the Vair. I have ran mine several times since you were here and still very smooth. I have capped my primer ports but have left all hardware to easily re-attach the primer if I deem it necessary this winter. So far, cold starts have been no problem for my Ellison but the temps have been fairly warm out, so that may be an issue when the cold air temps arrive. The plans (January 1990) state “the tail wheel cable should be attached as far forward on the rudder cable as possible before it enters the fuselage.” Where would this be? Seem I have to attach it BEFORE the last fairlead -- which is only 7 inches from where the cable enters the fuse. The second part of this question is HOW do I attach it? What fittings are used? Also can someone let me know what cable to buy? This is an older project which had been sitting in a leaky shed and the old cable was 1/8 inch. Do I use 7 x 7 flexible or 7 x 19? Seem I have to attach it BEFORE the last fairlead -- which is only 7 inches from where the cable enters the fuse. =========================================== The reason to attach it as far forward as possible is to try to reduce the side loads (pulling out of alignment) of the rudder cable. I attached my tailwheel cables to the rudder cables inside the fuselage (swedge fittings) and then ran them out the fuselage each in their own fairlead. Zero side loads on my rudder cables. As for the type of cable, look in the Wick's catalog and see what they sell for the rest of the KR cable and order the same stuff. I had a rather "up and down" day today. I got in 32 vertical miles hauling jumpers. If I tried to compute the horizontal miles I'd probably start feeling like I needed a beer and a recliner. :-) Larry Flesner ------------------------------ Message: 14 Date: Sun, 01 Aug 2004 21:22:00 -0500 From: larry flesner Subject: Re: KR> Turnbuckle Clarification To: KRnet Message-ID: <3.0.6.32.20040801212200.008127e0@pop.midwest.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > >When you buy the complete turnbuckle assembly does it include the >clevis pins? If you are getting the "forked" end turnbuckle you should be getting the size that takes a 3/16" bolt. Get the bolt with the drilled end, use a castle nut and a cotter pin. This could all vary of course depending on the application so get someone knowledgable to look it over and advise you. I haven't mentioned in quite some time now but information like this and MUCH, MUCH more can be found in the Tony Bingalis books available through the EAA. They are easy to read and a must for anyone building a homebuilt.
