Having recovered from the trauma associated with the financial disaster, I've reconciled myself to more modest financial outlays, and have taken a deep breath. Step 1: Create a website. In fact, a BLOG (Builder's LOG) You can view it at: http://rtfmsoft.com/kr Bearing in mind that while I'm far from proficient in the gentle arts of aircraft construction, I'm pretty tenacious. So maybe that'll see me through. The reaction (at my local GA-oriented aero club) to my announcement that I'm building a plane from plans has been less than enthusiastic, to say the least. But I'm not deterred that easily. I know a good thing when I see it, and the KR is just that - a good thing. And yes, I might not own more than a few rusty tools, but I'm not an idiot. And you guys are there to help when I get stuck. So I'm going to do this, with my wife's blessing. Here begins the first of many postings calling for help and encouragement. Gird your loins! All this time I have been patiently waiting for the welder at a shop to fabricate the exhaust for my turbo system. He finally finished the work two days ago and I was able to take my engine back to the hanger and do a final assembly. The engine accessory case was modified for the Subaru starter. I tried to fit the starter with the case mounted to the engine mount and one of the support tubes for the mount was in the way. So, it was back to a welder, this time a different person. I can't afford another 60 day delay. As is, with the gathering in only 50 day, I will have to put in a lot of time to get the KR finished and flight tested before making a cross country trip. I made a hasty order to AS&S for some 4130 5/8 x .049. It arrived the next day. The tubing will be used to relocate the interfering cross member. I also had to make some adjustments to the turbo plumbing to get everything to fit under the cowl just right. I'm hoping to get all this finished by Tuesday and start my final assembly. The copper head gaskets that I needed arrived after over a month of waiting. They were made by Geers engineering. I anticipate that my next big headache will come from trying to tune the engine, especially adjusting the Revflow carb. Hopefully I will have the exact needle that is needed for the increased gas flow required by the addition of the turbo. Another issue is all the added weight of the turbo. I'm guessing that I added a good 20 lbs up front. I still had a slight pitch up at full power and suspect the addition of the weight will not cause me any problems. I plan to run some W/B computations, to see what the paper says. I can always remove my large auto battery from the firewall and replace it with a lighter unit or move it to behind the seat. At this point I'd bet my total weight is close to 700 lbs. One of the main goals for the turbo installation is to be able to carry a passenger and maintain a minimum climb rate of 500 fpm. As this is my KR's 20 birthday summer, making it to the gathering is #1 priority, but only we can make it there safely. It is simple, easy and I believe that sure. I have some picture of a RG that was made in US there are about ten to twelve years, very similar to that of the Lancair. After all the problems I had with my recent AS&S order, I got something in the mail from them today that got me going again. Recall that the last order was eventually shredded by the dog after the UPS man left it on the front porch, right under the shelf with the sign that says "UPS, FedEx, etc...Please put boxes on shelf...dog will EAT anything left on porch". To their credit, AS&S promptly replaced that sensor with another UPS red shipment the next day, but what I got in the mail today was a statement with "total amount due" for the $33 price of the replacement. Of course I went through the roof and called them, and was assured that they ALWAYS send a bill to people whose packages have been reshipped due to insurance claims ("it helps to keep our paperwork straight"), and that I could just ignore it! Somebody's going to have to do a lot of talking to convince me that these people have a clue as to how to run a business. On a lighter note, the UPS guy told me yesterday that the UPS manager used the mutilated remains of the box and packaging debris to drive home the point that if there's a dog at a residence, you don't leave packages within their reach. Even wierder than the rest of this story, the other day the FedEx guy left a note on the door that he was unable to deliver my new 200G hard drive because of "barking dog". But he could have put the package on the shelf about 10 times faster than writing me that note and sticking it to the door two feet away. Yes, I called his manager too, after having to drive an hour and a half to pick it up at the FedEx office. And yes, somebody needs to do a little more work with the dog! I'm sure the kids will get right on it. I'm just about ready to give up on life altogether...but I'm making progress on the KR in spite of it all. Wouldn't the > FAA require a reinspection for a plane that has had that type of > modification? The short answer to this is no. The repairs to the plane as well as the modifications would require the sign off of the holder of the mechanic's certificate or any qualified A&P. It would require a call to the local FAA FSDO office to notify them of the modifications and they may assign a test time typically ranging from 5 - 25 hours. The FSDO will tell you to note in the logbook that the plane has been placed back into Phase 1 testing. One problem that you can run into with this situation is that you are not assigned a new test area when the plane is placed back into Phase 1 testing. As those that have been through licensing a plane probably know, Phase 1 testing has a specified test area assigned for that plane. If you move the plane somewhere else, you have to request FSDO to assign a new Phase 1 flight test area. If you move the plane to an area under a different FSDO it can get even more complicated. While that may seem like a simple request, it is rare enough that our FSDO didn't have a clue how to handle the request. It took several months to get a new Phase 1 test area assigned to an Avid Flyer that a friend bought that didn't have all the Phase 1 test time flown off.
