Can't personally vouch for it yet, but a lot of planes have used it. It has the alternator built in, but if you are going to require a lot of electric power, it might not provide enough charging. The starter works very well. 1600 is quite a small engine for a KR2. There is a time for building and a time for flying, and the time for building has long since expired. I use my milling machine vise that has hardened smooth jaws that are perfectly parallel. If you are using a standard bench vise with rough jaws you need to get some flat steel bar stock on the jaws. I covered it with glass on both sides. With the piano hinge attached for mounting, and with paint, it weighs 2 pounds 1.6 ounces (953 grams). It will be actuated by a car seat slide and motor. Weight Calculator formula To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: <20040514132445.68376.qmail@web40803.mail.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Mark, To Calculate how much your Aluminum Speed Brake will weigh use the following: Calculate the volume of your part by multiplying length x width x thickness Then multiply the sum by .105 Which is the density of aluminum plus a correction factor for fabrication (rivets, primer, etc.) Once you have calulated the base weight, calculate the volume of each hole using Pi x Radius squared x Height (thickness)x .105 Multiply this value by the number of holes you plan on removing. Subtract this sum from the base weight. so: (6 x 36 x .125)x.105=2.835 (Base) 3.1416 x .140625 x .125 x .105 =0.0058(.75 hole) .0058 x 18 = 0.1044 (hole total) and 2.835-0.1044= 2.7306 lbs (Base minus holes) If you are using 6061-T6, it is 80% weaker than the same thickness 7075-T6. 7075-T6 has a much higher yeild strength, and fatigue allowable. 6061-T6 is excellent for welding, however, it will revert back to "O" condition in the vincinity of the weld. The part could be re-heat treated, but it will revert to condition T-62. Re-heat treatment cannot restore the T6 properties. This .125 flat panel weighs more than twice that of a larger sized .040 panel w/stiffeners would weigh. It has more unsupported panel area, and doesn't have nearly the "I" (as in MC/I, which is the basic engineering formula for bending) that a fabricated panel would have. Do what you want, but please realize that a flat plate will: 1. Weigh more 2. Not be as strong 3. Probably fatigue crack from the panel buckling under the air loads and buffet loads. Even though you're adding holes in to the speed brake, those very holes that you've added to reduce weight and decrease the deployed area with, are going to cause drag when the speed brake is stowed, and they could cause some unwanted handling characteristic. Hope this helps. ===== Scott Cable KR-2S # 735 Wright City, MO s2cable1@yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? In revewing my application , they have asked if anyone else is flying at this weight? I know for a fact that many US based KRs are flying at this weight ( as I have flown in 2 myself). What I need is a statement ( E mail is fine) from 5 KR pilots flying ( legally ) at this weight or more to complete this application . If I am granted this , it will set the precedent for many KR2 owners in Canada to apply for this same gross weight. Can anyone on the KR NET help me with this ? I would ask Marty Roberts but he is not on this E mail forum . Does anyone have a contact for him.? Thanks in advance for your help and support. The nyla-flo tubing passes through the associated fairleads in the cockpit. Also have 12-inch lengths of nyla-flo tubing floxed through the 3/32 plywood where the cables exit the fuselage ahead of the rudder. Seems to be working very nicely. I suspect that if one were to use the new diode replacement lamps for the position lights that a 20 amp alternator is very likely all you will need, even for night VFR. I even connect my alternator output to my secondary battery on a regular basis to keep it charged (charging both batterys at the same time) and my ampmeter continues to show positive deflection. The largest constant load for night flight is the position lights. The landing lights are a very short duration load and should be easily handled by a fully charged battery. All other electrical demands are rather light. Add up all your electrical loads and see what your real needs are. If you are night VFR only and your alternator fails you could probably shut down 95 to 100 percent of your electrical loads and live to tell about it. Leave your strobes on, and electric fuel pumps if necessary, and turn on the radio only when needed and you most likely will run out of fuel before you run out of battery. The failure of a 20 amp or 60 amp alternator puts you in the same lifeboat. As always, your results may vary...... Phil >Matheson +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mine is mounted to the belly skin immediatly behind the rear spar. I reinforced the floor with a piece of 1/4" X 1" spruce from one bottom longeron to the other and mounted the piano hinge using 5 each 3/16" bolts. Other than airframe buffeting I've noticed no effects on handling when deployed down to 90 degrees. My KR is stretched 24 inches but is otherwise plans built. My "uneducated"guess is that I'd want it behind the center of lift and C.G for stability reasons. I can't see any reason that trigear or Diehl wing skins would make any difference. I have the new Dan Diehl nose leg 4130 . it is longer than the standard, I wanted to lift the main legs a few inches to level the KR , plus, this will give a slight increase in prop clearance. What are some of the prop sizes you Corvair or 0-200 flies using. and what have you done to increase your prop clearance.??? I'm guessing you are using larger props with the larger HP engine. As my geared VW 100hp, 200ft/lb torque will also need a larger prop and ground clearance. I actually cut an inch or two off of my nose gear strut to level my KR, but the extra clearence wouldn't hurt either. Good luck.
