I am currently using a VolksPower case which is no longer in production. Because I like the starter, I seriously considered modifying the Diehl case to accept a pulley and belt. I discussed this with a machine shop and another extremely skillful person and they agreed that it was fairly easy to do. But, before I make this suggestion to you, I must admit that I opted to modify my VolksPower case to accept the same starter as the Diehl case. So, Here Go's.....First of all gut the Diehl case, and rework the flywheel(you might have to replace the flywheel) moving it fwd to allow a V belt to pass. Replace the mag drive puck with one that has a pulley V cut in it or modify the current Mag drive puck to accept a V belt. My mag drive puck is solid Alum, screws into the back of the crank and is driven by five pins which are moved by the heads of the five internal wrenching flywheel attach bolts. Open the side of the case to allow the belt to exit, at what ever position you have the room to install an alternator. Attach to the outside of the back of the case a contour fit doubler, which can be attached by welding or by bolting through the case. This doubler willl support the bracket on which the alternator would be mounted. The hard part is that the starter mount must be thinned on the outside to allow the starter to reach the ring gear which is relocated forward. If it becomes too thin a doubler could be added to the inside. I think that this will work, without a lot of difficult re-engineering. I currently use a 75 Honda Civic Nipendenso Alternator of 35 Amps. I'm sure that almost any alternator could be used. I control mine with an older style ford regulator. I have a switch and light in the cockpit which functions the same as the idiot light in the car. With the Ignition on and the engine off, the light is red. with the engine running, the light is off. If the alternator fails, the light will come on. Hope this helps Orma Southfield, MI N110LR 20years old in August Replacement engine going together ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Fri, 14 May 2004 18:09:31 -0700 From: "David Mikesell" Subject: Re: KR> intercoms To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <003f01c43a19$47efae60$03fea8c0@aoldsl.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Me too David Mikesell 23597 N. Please send me some pictures to brian.kraut@engalt.com. I have a friend that may want to buy my cowl and I was also thinking of doing it in carbon fiber to save some weight also. I was thinking that I could put the two cowl halves together, coat the inside with mold release, cover the intake and prop holes, and fill it with the two part foam to make a plug that I could use for the carbon fiber cowl. Anyone ever done this before? Dan told me that longer legs are a whole lot more expensive and some people have had problems with the longer legs bending. He said that on the last long set he sold the builder wound up cutting them back to stock length, although I believe that Larry Flesner used extended legs with good results. Larry? Care to comment? Dan agreed that it may be better to make longer bottom brackets like Mark Langford shows on his site than to get the longer legs. I also asked about shimming the top of the leg on the bracket to make the legs about 5 degrees more vertical. That would give over another inch of height. Dan thought that was a good idea and should work fine. For various reasons I think that the stock Diehl gear puts the wheels a little far forward also so I ordered a set of blank uncut legs. I am going to do my own aluminum top attach brackets that will be about 5 degrees more vertical and will fit the dimensions of the 18% new airfoil spar. I am going to cut the angle on the legs a little different to bring the wheels aft a little, and I am going to do my own steel bottom fittings that are a little longer and are made for the different angle. I don't have all the dimensions worked out yet, but if anyone is interrested I can post the final results. I actually cut an inch or two off of my nose gear strut to level my KR, but the extra clearence wouldn't hurt either. Good luck. The price from Dan is $1,800 for the skins, $50 for crating, and $30 for the video. I will sell them for $1,600 plus shipping. They will ship from Jacksonville, FL, or they can be picked up. I also have a set of Diehl gear for sale. The set consists of the upper casting, the gear leg, the lower brackets, and the bolt kit. As when you buy the set from Dan, it does not include the axles. The legs are already glassed and have the straw for the brake line already done. The glass work is very good and will require very little finishing. The set is for a tail dragger, but I think they are the same as for a nose wheel, just mounted on the other side of the spar. Not 100% sure on this, but someone on the list should know. The legs are not drilled yet and the holes to mount the leg to the upper casting are not drilled in the casting yet, so there is no worry that there is any misalignment on this set. The holes to mount the upper fittings to the spar are drilled. Dan sells the set for $525 plus $15 for shipping. I will sell them for $475 with shipping in the U.S. included. The work that is done should save about three or four hours. I also have a set of Rand 2S wing attach fittings for $350.00 with shipping included. Last, but not least, I have a set of 2S forward outboard spars for sale. The wood work is very good and I will sell them for $80.00 plus shipping. I think they can ship by UPS. Mine has not flown yet so take this for what it is worth. When I ordered my prop from Ed Sterba for an O-200, he recommended a 60-72 but said that it was a 50-50 bet that it might need to be pitched a little lower. I am working hard to reduce drag for the high speed and I have relatively long wings, so the climb performance should not be too bad. My ground clearance was not a problem. I made my own gear legs and I have plenty of room.
