The last two photos at http://www.flysquirrel.net/gear/gear.html show this unit. Semi-pneumatic means the tire is hollow inside but there isn't a valve stem or any way to inflate the thing; it relies on the stiffness of the tire compound for shock absorption and flex. I can weigh any or all of it if anyone is interested (it's sitting in my garage), or give you measurements of axle diameter, width, etc. If it matches the dimensions of any flying KR that would care to try it out, I'd be happy to box it up and have it on its way for test purposes... just email me privately. Same goes for any KR currently able to do taxi testing that would care to try it out. The tailwheel was purchased through W.W. Grainger and is a standard catalogued item of theirs. I have it mounted on a fabricated tailwheel fork and pivot that is welded to a single-leaf Aircraft Spruce "homebuilder tailwheel spring", modified. This assembly has NOT been flown yet. And be advised that adding size to your tailwheel means you can't 'stall' the aircraft as firmly in a landing (in a taildragger, of course). I don't know how much aft stick travel most KRs have past the stall on the ground, but using a larger tailwheel nibbles away at that travel effectiveness because once she's in the 3-point attitude on the ground, that's all you get. From some of the material posted on the web it seems like this system is close to if not the same as the West System. Thank you and wish you all a very happy new year! If it did- sorry for the repeat. If not- here it is again: I have a 6" semi-pneumatic tailwheel on my M-19 "Flying Squirrel" (not yet flown). 'Semi-pneumatic' means that the tire is hollow but doesn't have a valve stem for filling. It relies on the tire compound stiffness for shock absorption. Pictures are the last two at http://www.flysquirrel.net/gear/gear.html and the tire is a standard catalogued item from W.W. Grainger. (I believe it's the $25 unit at http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/productdetail.jsp?xi=xi&ItemId=1611763914&ccitem= ). The tailspring is the Aircraft Spruce "homebuilder" single-leaf, modified to receive the pivot which is welded on. I have the unit in my garage so if anyone is interested in the axle dimensions, weights, or other details- let me know and I'll get that. In the meantime, I stand ready to box this up and ship it to any KRNetter who is flying or taxi testing and is interested in trying it out. No charge. I will point out that going to a larger diameter tailwheel will have a slight effect on your landing configuration and speed if you have a taildragger, because you won't be able to get as much angle of attack on the wing while on the ground. Probably not a factor, but a consideration. The wing attach fittings barely clear the trailer door, and for 1 person loading it's kind of dicey. The trailer was originally purchased as a mobile hangar, as hangar space in Chandler had a 6 year waiting list, and I wanted to keep the KR out of the sun. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably wait and get a 20' trailer, so I'd have room for a workbench, and be able to put the wings in on their wing dolly in front of the KR. As it is, the wings go underneath. The tandem wheels give the trailer a real good ride. Find a broken cart and extract the castering wheel. Another place is the medical supply companies which have some of the best looking small wheel that I have seen. Please think about that large heavy wheel and the moment arm that its extreme aft position will bring. One of the reasons that tailwheels have continued to exist is that they are small and create less drag then the nose gear. And, if you keep it small enough there is obviously less weight. There are down sides to the tailwheel but they can be overcome, and are insignificant if you have already decided to use a tailwheel anyway. On one of my trips home from Oshkosh the bearings in my 2" wheel seized up and upon reaching my fuel stop some one noticed that half of the wheel had been ground off and I was dragging the remainder. "Funny", I said to the man, "I never noticed". "How was I going to continue my trip home." someone asked? I replied that I was going to pretend that he had never seen the problem and just continue my trip. To my way of thinking I know that I had just landed, taxied down several taxiways and parked without missing the wheel, Why was I going to sit Indiana hoping I could find a replacement. One has to remember that several taildragger aircraft only had skids on the rear, no wheel at all. To turn the aircraft all I had to do was apply power, fwd stick and use differential braking. I think their wonderful new anti-spam software is waaaay to overzealous! And if you don't have some other account (with a whole different ISP) you can't even contact them to tell them that rr has blocked you!
