I cursed mine the whole time I was sanding the foam to the airfoil shape. I would be willing to bet that I spent at least five hours just sanding the foam to shape. Yes, that blue foam is inexpensive and easy to get but unless you are a pro at hot wiring foam and have the correct hot wiring equipment, I would not ever use the blue foam. I tried hot wiring mine before sanding and screwed that up also. Had to remove the foam, install more, hot wired it again to rough shape and then started sanding. Trust me, the blue foam does not sand as easily as the polyurethane does. I still have a full sheet of 4'x8'x2" blue foam that anyone can have if they come and get it. I am off to the airport right now for a full day of KR YeeeeeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!! A series of lines scribed parallel with the spars. Then they were gently bent to airfoil contour as they got a small dab of hot melt to hold them temporarily in place. The inside contour was perfectly smooth and required no further work before installation of fiberglass. The scribed lines on the outer surface got filled with a semi-thick micro and left to dry. Later sanded the micro even with the surface and what resulted was a thinker version of Dan Diehl's wing skins except they were the new airfoil and needed very little sanding at all. One note though epoxy resin only, don't ask! Works excellent if you have a few false ribs installed so that the washout is easier to achieve. Doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I was really having one of those YeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa moments, as it was as smooth as glass up there. I was having the time of my life. Then, all of a sudden, over the radio, I hear this voice say "Mark, look over your left shoulder". I did, and there was Joe Weber in his KR sitting off my left wing tip. What a beautiful sight. Joe had heard me reporting my positions as I was test flying close to Hartford airport. Knowing where I was, he decided to sneak up behind me. What a blast we had flying loose formation with each other. I really enjoyed it when he was out front and I was following him. Kind of made me feel like a fighter pilot. Any how, Joe had been on my left wing tip for only a few minutes when all of a sudden something hit my prop. I immediately radioed Joe and told him I had a bird strike. He acknowledged that he had seen something and I immediately turned to the airport. Joe in turned pulled up beside me to check for damage on my stabilizers. He reported to me all looked ok. I could not detect any abnormalities either in flight characteristics or engine performance. Landing back at the airport was normal. Upon exiting the plane and checking it over, I found no indication of a bird, such as feathers or blood but I did find the front part of my spinner was gone. The spinner had separated from the aircraft and struck the prop being thrown up and over the top of my plane. It did absolutely no damage except for a small scratch on the prop. The contributing factor to this event was the lack of a front bulkhead spinner. Do not fly without one. I am just waiting on some farmer to show up on the news tonight with this strange looking piece of alien spaceship that fell in his field. After that bit of excitement, Joe and I then went to the local restaurant and Joe bought me lunch. I now owe him one. When we got back to the airport we went flying again and he took air to air photos of my plane. What a YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA day.............I now have 3.6 total KR flight hours. I did not touch the stick again until exactly 60 seconds had passed. Yes, one full minute of hands off flying and I could have gone longer. After about 40 seconds, the plane descended 50' and then began a gradual climb to 50' above release altitude. It was at the end of that climb that I took control of the stick. I also tried hands off turns and it would stay in the turn just as it was when I released the grip with eventual gradual wing leveling. Way too cool...... I have not done anything yet. I will try to let you know later when I "attack" that problem. Today, I "glued" the firewall to the fuselage. tomorrow I start the installation of the engine mount and engine. My schedule is something like this. 1. Run engine in April 2. Taxi in May 3. High speed taxi and first flight in June 4. Obtain airworthiness certificate and start flying 40 hours in July 5. Continue flying off time and working squawks in August Get ready for Mt. What type of weight has the group been using to test and where has the weight been placed and secured. My plan was to use some softener salt bags @40 pounds each. working my way up to 5 bags. I will use one as leg, sitting on the floor, two in the seat lying flat and one resting on the seat back, and the fifth leaning aft against the forward face of the fwd spar. I plan to use #40 bags because if one does shift, I can move it with one hand. The #80 bag is way too big for me to move. I don't like sand, because every bag that I ever used, left sand in my hand. If some spills, it is too hard to vacuum it all up, and I can just feel the grains in my eyes already. The baffling comes up to it, and then it provides the necessary restriction to make air go thru either it or heads. Mark some years ago I experienced a spinner that came off in flight. In my case the engine began to violently sake for between 5 and 10 seconds. That was the longest few seconds ever spent in the cockpit. the vibration was so intense that I could not see the panel. Then all of a sudden it was like dead silence. I had to look to determine that the engine was still running.. When the dome departed, there was a bang as the prop kicked it past the canopy. All of this happened some where near your house, so if that farmer try's to give you an old corroded dome, you'll know where it came from. I tried to install the front bulkhead on my latest spinner, but it does not fit due to the thickness of the prop. It came GPASC and I'm sure it was made to fit a prop of X thickness, It did not fit the prop on my plane.
