It probably would have been fun to write about two pages on how I'd been flying for weeks now, with all kinds of details as to performance and all that stuff. What I'd REALLY planned to do for the last few months was to fly it March 31, and then post first flight results today (April Fools day), and then nobody would believe me! And it would have been a perfect day for it too. But that didn't happen, mainly because of work. I'm not usually so busy that I have to work overtime, but I've probably averaged 12 hour days for the last three months, and includes a lot of weekend time as well, so that's my excuse. We've been working on a proposal at work that will guarantee me a really neat job (UAVs and engines) for the next 10 years. Things should let up shortly though, so I should get a lot more done on the KR. I'm still working on it when I get a chance. There are still a lot of little things that need to be done before it flies. There's no point in flying it half-way put together, and then running back and forth for tools to finish this job or that job. I think I'll make first flights with no spinner though! I'll get it ready to go and then fly it, but not before. I have 8 weeks of vacation saved up, so if things get slow at work I will make some real progress. So you won't find my plane on ebay or anything, at least not before next April Fool's day. The "flying" comment on the EAA 190 web page is a mistake made by the Newsletter editor, who thought SURELY I'd be flying by the time the recent newsletter came out, so the web guy changed my status a little prematurely. I learned yesterday that our EAA chapter treasurer died of a heart attack while working out in the gym yesterday, at the age of 41. I talked to him last Saturday while he was painting the wings on his Tandem Air Bike project. He always kept up with my web pages, and commented on my progress (or the lack thereof). Just goes to show you that you never know when you're number's up, so you've got to get your YeeeeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaaaaaas in early... But for the land locked math wises in the group, I submit the following. The other day I loaded 120 pounds into my passenger seat and put the scale under the tail. My original tail weight was #10. With the #120 of salt, the tail weighed 60. Here goes!! When I input the #120 into my W & B in the station for the pilot and passenger, I got one number. When I put the numbers in as parts of the 120, placing 50 at the tail and 70 at the passenger seat, the CG moved 2" aft. Now , my W&B program is in a spreadsheet and not subject to my poor math skills. So, those of you with W&B programs can play with these numbers while I do some testing. All of my load conditions in my sheet assumed the original condition of the tail station at #10. All my calculations assumed that the passenger and pilot weight was at a datum of 73. I looked at Dan Heath's sheet and he uses individual weights for his calculations. Which must be more accurate. You presupposed that the passenger seat and main landing gear weighing point are at the same station. They are probably pretty close, but apparently not exactly at the same station (as revealed by the difference in outcome). Either that, or I misunderstand your spreadsheet entries and weighing points. The Stanley twins built a fantastic little steam car about a hundred years ago. Random E. Olds liked it so much, he tried to buy it from them. To discourage him and get him to leave them alone, they told him they wanted one million dollars for the rights to the car, an amount they were sure in those days that he would find ridiculous. He took them up on it and, being the gentlement they were, they sold him the rights. Within a year, however, they had designed and built a better steam car, and Olds gave up building steamers and turned back to the gasoline engined cars. Are you SURE that price is high enough? Why did you "put" 50 at the tail ? You didn't put #50 there did you ? Why did you part out the 120, do you plan on carrying a two part person ? The scale reading increase at the tail is a "result".
