If it's fiberglass and 100% silicone, why isn't it clear What I called Rutan cloth, is the Long EZ cloth and I think I picked up that name from one of the catalogs. The color is one of the neat things about making your own material. You can get the silicone in a lot of different colors. This one is aluminum. See you in Mt. Since there is not much traffic, I'll relate my experience with crosswind today. At KPTK, my local airport, the winds were 340 degrees at 10kts. The runway is 270, or 70 degrees across the wind. This provided for an excellent practice, and is close to the KR limit. To stay on the centerline required nearly full right rudder and my right aileron was placed full up. As the aircraft lifted off the runway, I was able to release some of the rudder and aileron. The aircraft climbed into the wind for the crosswind leg and went up from 1400MSL to 1800 in about 15 seconds. I only went around once due to increasing wind speed. Landing was uneventful. I used a higher speed and floated for a while for a wheeled landing. We use rotary swaging machines to taper the ends of the tubing where threads can be added. Mine will be made from 1.250 OD x .035 Wall 2024-T3, heat treated to T42 after forming, this will produce a push rod compression allowable of around 300 pounds at 90.00 inches long, no sense in being stronger than I am. Mark's suggestion is how the RV push rods are made and it's pretty simple; seems to me I read an EAA sport magazine article within the last year showing how to do it as well. For my own push rod, I know Swaging with (Rotary dies) a taper leading to a reduced diameter on the end so that a mating thread for the rod end can be added, will result in lower weight and improve the fatigue strength of the rod. Estimated weight savings is around 3 tenths of a pound, not a lot really, but it all adds up. If there is any interest, I could make others at the same time Anyone interested should send me a email off line, with what you need, length and thread size in the ends, if you know the lever arm of the control stick, I am figuring 75 pounds forward force for my mine, factor that by the mechanical advantage, if its less than 300 then 1.25 x .035 should work I could then purchase the aluminum tubing in one lot, might save some money and have the ends swaged up, trimmed and tapped as needed Push rod, Boat compete and on wheels, tail surfaces in work Jim Mullen Everett Washington -----Original Message----- From: sph12@sbcglobal.net [mailto:sph12@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Sunday, April 03, 2005 5:01 PM To: krnet@mylist.net Subject: KR> Aluminum Push Rods Hello group, Does anyone know a supplier that sells aluminum push rods that are threaded on each end so that I can use it for my elevator?
