Make a cardboard template first even if you have to piece card board together from smaller pieces, tailor it to fit the existing wood firewall with the engine mount holes and everything. Then use the template as a pattern for the final stainless steel firewall. I used stainless steel on top of asbestosis and I got the stainless steel from a local sign shop. I think your best bet would be a sheet metal shop if you can find one, if not look for a sign shop. Good luck with your project. A woman building an airplane of any kind is rare so I would still like to have some progress pictures, better yet, send some to Mark Langford and ask him to put them on his web site so all of us can look at them. Next, mount the Diehl nose wheel bracket to the firewall. Then weld two supports from the nose wheel bracket to the engine mount tray. The pictures on my web site will tell the story. Here is the link. http://mywebpage.netscape.com/n886mj/mount.html Also, before mounting the Diehl nose wheel bracket to the firewall, cut off the two brace arms from the bracket as you will be replacing those with new ones. Simple as that. My stainless sheet is 0.007 inches thick. It is or was on the parts catalog from RR. Now my question to the list: My stainless sheet is already attached to the 1/4 inch firewall. I need to drill holes. Is there a drill bit that cuts thru the stainless? So far no joy. The Unibit has steps on it so you can cut various size holes. It cuts very quickly and very clean. Try it...you will never regret it. I now have a new wife that likes planes. She made me by a Bellanca Cruiseair and a Viking. I sold the Viking and am now getting back into the KRs. She says she really missed the KR gatherings and wants to make the next one. You know this one because you keep asking for more hugs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "VIRGIL N SALISBURY" To: Sent: Monday, January 10, 2005 9:00 PM Subject: Re: KR> same person > YUP, The one that does not say much, Virg > Did I send your girlfriends picture to your wife?? > > On Mon, 10 Jan 2005 19:49:32 -0600 "Randy Smith " > writes: >> Is the Virgil Salisbury the same one that lives in Florida that >> always worked the KR booth. _______________________________________ >> Search the KRnet Archives at >> http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp >> to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to KRnet-leave@mylist.net >> please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html >> >> > > > Virgil N. It sold it about 2.5 yrs ago and it was never reregistered. I have been trying to find out what happened to it. The guy that bought it was from east Texas and the guy that flew it out was from Oklahoma. ------------------------------ Message: 10 Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 23:44:29 -0500 From: "Dean Cooper" Subject: KR> Update / New Pics To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <000901c4f798$42975480$6101a8c0@office> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Netters, It's been a while since I posted any progress. I've been busy building. After the Gathering in September, I returned and got busy on the tail feathers. I have everything but the VS ready for finish sanding. Click here to see a pic http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/HS_19.JPG. On a minor note, I finished my seat back. I used 0.50" last-o-foam glassed on both sides and hinged to my one piece carbon seat. The whole thing slips right out. I got this idea from Bill Clapp. Also, I cut the seat back to make a 1/3 - 2/3 split back so part can act as a map holder/arm rest/cup holder when flying solo. See the pic at http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Seat_15.JPG. Lastly, I have spent the last 2-3 weeks working on my canopy. I started with a stock KR2 Canopy frame. I "flattened" it to make more head room and added 4.25" risers on each side to raise the canopy to fit me. Then, I took Mark L's hinge design and modified it to mount to the fuselage sides. I am really happy with how this is coming together. Take a look at a few pics at http://www.geocities.com/djramccoop1/Canopy.html. I know it's not finished, but it looked so good, I figured I would share it. :-) I have plenty more pictures, but I just haven't stopped long enough to get them posted to the website. I'm trying to get this thing in the air by the end of 2005. Also, I kept most of my pics indoors to keep from depressing Mark J any more. We've had the most beautiful January weather I can remember; 10 days straight of 75 degree, clear-sky days. (Sorry Mark, I hope you get her in the air soon!) I welcome any comments. Hope all is well out in KR land...
