To: KRnet Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Gee, Colin, you pushed me to do a veeery long Internet search to check that one! ;-) It seems the SAE scale is completely arbitrary. It was made by defining brackets ("ratings") on a viscosity table, which itself was defined in the International Standard viscosity unit, which is in square millimeters per second, AKA Centistokes. The SAE being the Society of American Engineers, I would have expected something from the British Imperial system, but it seems there is no Imperial viscosity unit. Since the Imperial system is based on ancient kings' body parts, maybe the kings refused to have the viscosity of their blood sampled? ;-) Serge Vidal KR2 "Kilimanjaro Cloud" Paris, France "Colin & Bev Rainey" Envoyé par : krnet-bounces@mylist.net 2005-04-25 21:14 Veuillez répondre à KRnet Remis le : 2005-04-25 21:14 Pour : "KRnet" cc : (ccc : Serge VIDAL/DNSA/SAGEM) Objet : KR> Specs etc... Serge, you probably saw numbers changed into the metric system, we here would see them posted on literature in F. The first number before the "W" is the winter rating, oil's ability to thin, and the second is the summer rating, and ability to thicken, or withstand high temperature before breakdown. The manufacturers do not add the "S" because it would be redundant. _______________________________________ Search the KRnet Archives at http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to KRnet-leave@mylist.net please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2005 19:43:03 +1000 From: "Martindale Family" Subject: KR> Oil pan To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <003f01c54a44$668ee700$da26ecdc@athlon2400> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Thanks Colin This all raises an interesting question about the max angle that the Corvair can be mounted. Anyone venture a guess? Mine is currently 9 degrees in the tail down attitude but I imagine the car can climb far steeper hills than that. I guess an excessively steep angle would: 1.. starve the cam gear of its little oil bath at the front. 2.. increase leakage via the rear seal. 3.. decrease chance of starvation at the pick up since it is at the rear. 4.. cause the rear crank to start foaming. A deeper pan might reduce the possibility of these things. but I'm also wondering whether it would impact on the way the lifters operate. The rear ones being under oil and perhaps unable to bleed down. I've got a stock pan and had no problems so far but the fuel level (and hence mixture ratio) in the carb bowl does certainly vary depending on the engine angle. My new fuel pump arrived today from Clarks (bloody fast service). Three reinforced diaphragms looks far more reliable than the original I had. Catch ya. If you can not fly your KR there then walk...hitch hike....ride your bike...take a train or drive your car. Thank God I will not have to drive my car to any more Gatherings. Their main function as I understand them is to create and maintain standards by which automobiles are measured by along with parts and support industry. By that I mean uniform standards for measuring things like horsepower and torque, and establishing standards for measuring fluid quality and use, like for oils and coolant. It seems to me that their purpose was more for accurate information getting to the consumer, and his ability to make selections based on a standard scale rather than just advertising. John as long as we keep the pickup tube immersed in motor oil we should be okay at any reasonable mounting angle, and once in flight positive g's will keep the oil returning properly. Maybe we should ask William Wynne if it should just become the standard to over fill the Corvair to the bottom of the pushrod tubes, and call this aviation full. Oh no, not the countdown again! It drove me to point of...well.. going! I was the early 'Cannuck' that drove 11 hours straight to get their on Thursday and get 'camped' and was also a non KR owner. For those of you even considering a KR (like me) GO TO THE "GATHERING" (like me) and learn a whole lot of KR stuff that's not in the archives. I also learned much more like the 'proper' liquid to bring.how much to bring.and met a bunch of folks who 'learned me'. You will know what an Orma, Heath, Dana, Bob, Mark, Steve, Pat all mean and look like! Maybe even get a ride now that Langford's gonna bring his own -o- (If I go again I might bring one of my Corvairs .eh! Doug?) It has to be correct for both conditions.
