I am from Grahamstown. We (partner & self) bought the plane from a third party, who needed $ quickly. But the actual builder is from the states, and it appears as if he got tired of the building process. The plane was partially assembled in Port Alfred near 43rd Airschool. Thanks for the info. After half an hour of circuits I was climbing out and at about 600ft the engine lost power. This is the second time this happed, the first time I thought I was low on fuel. THE SECOND TIME: The prior landing was a long glide approach, touch and go, climb to 500ft, turn left while still climbing at 80 knots, then a big loss of power, nose down, yep I can make the strip, split ass turn and line up for a down wind landing, during the nose down push and turn I also turned on the electric boost, I still had more than half a tank of fuel. The engine is still running but rough and now I'm to high and fast to land on the strip, sacrifice some speed for hight, back up to 700ft, and decide to continue to the downwind end of the strip and land into wind. Oh, yea, I remember fitting that carby heat knob when I fitted the new engine (we don't have them in gliders), pull the carby heat on, start my turn back to line up and as I'm nearly lined up the engine smoothed out and started to pull like a train, so I continued my turn and circled up to 1000ft AGL without missing a beat. I joint a late downwind, staying with in glide of the strip, and did a normal base and final to an 8.5 out of 10 landing. I taxied back to the hanger, changed my underwear, and removed the cowling to check the fuel filter, all was OK. Did some more circuits, now using the carby heat on all descents, no problems. So now I've learnt about carby icing. :-) This can also be found on the bottom of my WEB page http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/tales.htm regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/kr2.htm ------------------------------ Message: 13 Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 20:12:41 -0600 From: Subject: KR> When it rains it------- To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <002301c4f9de$87410de0$714c9445@DELL> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Steve, I wish I had some GOOD news for you. The KR2 looses a lot (I MEAN A LOT) of hight when doing tight turns, especially with the motor at idle. I suggest practicing tight turns with and without power a must as I have done on numerous occasions. This practice helped me make the decision to head back to field. regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/kr2.htm ------------------------------ Message: 15 Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 20:45:39 -0600 From: "Mike Turner" Subject: Re: KR> tri-carriage To: "KRnet" Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Andy, I bought a kr2 in the boat stage and cut it into on purpose so I could stretch it another 14 inches. It wasn't too difficult for me because the bottom ply skin had not been put on yet. I leveled the boat, built a support for both the rear section and the front section so the top logerons could be maintained in the same plane at all times. I cut through the boat 1/2 way between 2 vertical members using a 1 to 12 ratio angle on the cuts. I added an extra logeron to the bottoms of both top logerons and an extra logeron to the tops of both bottom logerons for the length of 2 stations (approx 28"). Once I had the rear section moved back 14" I clamped 1"x2"s to the sides at the top logerons and also near the bottom logerons to hold everything in place. By doing this all of the horz. members top and bot had to be cut and replaced because all of those distances will have to change. Also the bottom rake as it slopes up to the tail will also change and compensation will have to be made to accommodate this change in slopes. I also added 4 pieces of 3/32" plywood by 4" wide to the joints on the inside of the skin. (this is over kill) Then put in an extra station. If you already have the skin on the bottom stretching might be out of the question unless you just cut the whole bottom out from the rear spar back to the tail and replace it. One of the highest stressed parts of a plane is the fusalage just behind the wing so that is not a real good place to repair it. Do take a look at the FAA advisory Circular A.C. 43.13 in the wood repair section. You can download it from the FAA web site. It won't give you the complete answer, but it does give you the proper methods for making scarfs and general wood construction and repair.
