I attached a small scoop over the cooler and it did make a difference of about 10 degrees. It did however block some of the air flow over the cylinders, but it didn't seem to affect my CHT noticeably. It was an experiment and I removed the scoop later simply because my oil temp stayed in the green without it. The lower lip of the opening in my cowl on that side is just flush with the top of the cooler. I wonder if that contributes to something. Was also toying with the idea of cooling the filter. I thought I saw something in a VW rod magizine years ago that looked like a finned cover for the filter. I only have 14 hours on the engine, 1.5 in flight, the rest in taxiing...so claim no solid insight or knowledge. I cant imagine how you could move the stock cooler below. I have seen several set-ups with remote (after market) coolers on the firewall. The extra complexity of piping and directing cool air to the fire wall mounting turned me off to the idea. I have also seen a type three engine with the stock cooler mounted on the top center line of the engine, facing directly into the wind. The new airport manager at Mt.Vernon says the airport belongs to the KR crowd for the weekend. Let's plan on making this years Gathering even bigger and better than last years. Forums: I'm cutting down the number of forums this year from 8 to 4. It was rushed last year and I'd like to give the attendees a bit more time to look at, touch, and drool over the KR's. The Gathering web page has been updated with the forum schedule. We'll have one forum each morning and each afternoon on Friday and Saturday. They are: Airframe, systems, engines, and W&B+ registration+ flying a KR. I'm having 25 registration packets made available for those builders that are nearing completion. I will be asking several builders/ pilots to help out at the different forums and if you would like to contribute, e-mail me off net at ( flesner@midwest.net. ) Hotels: The Holiday inn has limited rooms available this year so if you'd like to stay there, please register asap. There are many other fine motels available also and that info is available on the Gathering website ( www.krgathering.org ). For those of you bringing spouces, the Cedarhurst Craft Fair will be going on that same weekend and is something they might enjoy attending. There should be enough for them to do so they can enjoy the trip to the Gathering as much as you do. Meals: I'm planning on having meals available at the airport again this year for Friday lunch and dinner, Saturday lunch, and of course the Saturday evening banquet will be held in the airport terminal, the same as last year. Shirts and hats: Check out the Gathering web page for the shirts and hats for this years Gathering. If you plan to attend and haven't pre-registered, please do so ASAP. Hats and shirts are pretty much on a pre-order basis, similar to last year. I may have a few extra but please don't count on it. I'm trying to limit the financial exposure in this area and still make everyone happy. I have the first round of orders finished and in the box and plan to submit another order soon so get your request in via the pre-registration forms. If you've already pre-registered and need to change/update an order, please e-mail me direct with your request to my e-mail address given above. This will be my 16th Gathering without a missed year and I'm looking forward to seeing the many old friends I've made and hopefully see some new KR's and make new friends that I'll get to see again next year. Speaking of next year, we usually change locations every couple of years so if you'd like to host the Gathering for 2006 or know someone that does, start making plans now to bring your "sales pitch" to the Gathering. Next years location will be voted on at the awards banquet Saturday evening. And speaking of awards, they are finished and in the box also, just waiting for someone to fly in to the Gathering and fly home with a throphy. HOW MANY MORE DAYS, MARK JONES ????????????? I simply set guide lines for myself as regards to oil temp based on 20 years of reading the news letters and what VW manuels dictate. My type 4 is stock, straight from the car, single ignition. My question in reply to your statement is; what is "over heating" and at what stage of the flight? What is acceptable? I chose to run with a max CHT of 350, oil pressure not to exceed 220F in taxi and climb, cruise temp at 170-190F and pressure at 25-45PSI. depending on temperature. As I said before, I have only a dozen hours of engine taxi and 1.5 in flight. Guess what, that first flight was so absorbing, I failed to watch the temp. But, the taxi testing showed no problems....save for a defective pressure gauge that kept me quite worried until Orma ( a fellow netter with almost 2 decades of flight behind a type 4) talked me thru the solution. I dare say, Orma is following this chit chat between us and hopefully will chime in with some expertise! How much flight time do you have on this craft? Does it run hot?..and again, what is hot? After 9 years, 3 months, 8 days and over 3200 hours of building it passed it's airworthiness inspection under the skilled eye of AB-DAR Bobby Thomas of Maryland. I had very few things that he asked to be done to pass. In fact it was drill 4 bolts and safety, sand a little fiberglass to clear the elevator horn, and fix the engraving on the Data plate. He had a few other suggestions that I will also do. The inspection was very thorough and included taxi and full engine run up. Everything worked as it should and he told me that it was one of the easier ones he had done. Mr Thomas was very knowledgeable, helpful and a very nice gentleman to boot. My experience with the AB-DAR program has been very good and I would recommend it for any that are having trouble getting a schedule with the FSDO or the MIDO. I will be helping William Wynne out but may be at the flightline more than anything with the other KRs. If you need to get a hold of me there I will also be helping at the ZENAIR booth and possibly inside one of the hangers where the MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) booth is. My dad will be maning the MAF booth part of the time. It looks like a fun time. Does anybosy know when the KR dinner and get togethers are scheduled?
