I'm running an aerocarb I'm not sure if its the carb or maybe the ignition is cutting out. Hopefully we can both figure out this problem. Should I look for another type of carb? At first read, that felt a bit strange, because I have a much different experience. When I was learning to fly my KR2, the instructor asked me to remove the wheel pants, so that we don't damage them in case of rough landings. I did not notice any serious difference at the time. Now, thinking of it, your speeds are much greater, and I suppose the faster you go, the more the drag will be significant. YEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAA. !! With the old 600X6's and even more recently with the 500:5's I was seeing approx 155 indicated at full throttle level flight. It would pull about 2600 rpm on the 0-200. This morning the ol' girl was pushing 170 indicated and pulling about 2700 rpm, and several times the ASI was bumping 172 mph or so. Power up Mooney drivers or eat my dust !!!!!! I installed the new style RV pants that didn't come with any directions so it took a bit to make them work but they're on, they look good, and fly great !! The air was really bumpy today so I didn't get any accurate speed runs in. I did get in one eight-way GPS run but it was a bit bumpy and I had to dodge a few clouds. It averaged out to 165 mph which gives me an HONEST 10 mph increase over no wheel pants. I think a good run in smooth air will show a 12 to 14 mph increase. Before wheel pants I'd level out at cruise and the ASI would work its way up to the 155 mph mark when I could get the VSI to settle down. With the pants installed I'd level off and the ASI quickly shot to the 160 mark and when I got the VSI to settle out it was hitting 170 !! Now , even with moderate turblance and a bouncing VSI it stays in the 160 to 165 range. The GPS run, by the way, was at a density altitude of approx 8000 feet so I was probably only getting 22 inches of MP and able to pull 2500 rpm. Also on a low altitude full throttle run I'm picking up an additional 50 to 75 rpm with the increased speed. My problem now will be taking them off long enough to finish them. All I can say is " you have to catch me to tell me they look tacky" !! I am one "happy dude" with one "mean machine". And I thought I had something to YEEEEE HAAAAAAA about before....... If you are really concerned you could eliminate ignition as the cause by installing a dual ignition system. What is the chance that both systems could have a miss at the same time. My old 1915 had an occasional miss. On my new 2366 I installed dual ignition and have only had one miss, and I feel it was mixture related due to turning off my boost pump at full power. I have come to the conclusion that their might be other problems that could cause the random miss. One possibility is a sticking valve. This could happen when the engine is really heat soaked from extended taxi time and a lot of pattern work where the engine is not allowed to cool between full power operations. Another possibility is for momentary fuel vapor lock. Again a heat soaked engine compartment on a hot day could be enough to boil the fuel. I have practiced limiting full power operations on warm days. I do pattern work early in the morning when the temp is cool. On hot days I only use enough power to get off the ground and power back as soon as I can to allow the engine to stay cool. Catching or finding the cause of a random miss is not easy. To: KRnet Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" When I started my conversion training on the KR2 I had just bought, on the second flight, the engine missed a beat. At that time, I had partially redundant ignition (two electronic timing systems, but only one set of coils and plugs). The second system was supposed to be used for backup only. That showed me what a real pilot is made of. The instructor had owned a KR2 before, but he was hardly familiar with that specific KR2. Yet, he reached for the ignition switches at lightspeed, and before I knew it, we were on backup mode. Back at the hangar, I investigated the problem. To my absolute shame, I realized it was all my fault. One of the spark plug caps was loose. A light turbulence had it jump up for a couple seconds. Never happened again. There will be a lot of KR enthusiast attending. Also, on Sunday July 24th, There should be several KR's at Hartford Airport (KHXF) which is 38.8 miles south of Oshkosh. We will be grilling out lunch and then the KR's will proceed on to Oshkosh from there. With luck, maybe others will fly their KR's in during the week.
