The 2S plan does add crossmembers at stations "E" & "H", so maybe it just got skipped, or they assumed it would be carried over from the -2 plans. The crossmember at "A!" on the -2 (rudder pedal support) is also missing but is implied by the dash on the side view. This would be close I think to the Grove gear. I've found on my KR2 that props bigger than this have very little if any clearance in anything other than a very smooth wheeler landing. Flex the legs a little and add a squashed tyre or deflated tyre plus a bit too much forward stick and there ain't much left. 54 " has the advantage of being able to spin up your engine (mine's a Corvair) to around 3800-4000 rpm and take advantage of its best power/torque if needed. For cable running over pulleys (control cable), don't use stainless. It's not as flexible as galvanized. Also, galvanized tends to fail one strand at a time and is easier to inspect for failures for that reason. I believe it is also assembled using some sort of coating that helps cut down on friction between the individual strands. For "standing wires" such as braces, especially since they are exposed to the elements constantly, stainless might be preferred. Boy, I sure am glad we're not talking about prop extensions here (inside humor). I used stainless on my rudder cables since they don't make any real turns, and they are exposed to the elements at the rear of the plane, but used galvanized for the aileron cables, since they make a turn out at the end of the spars, and the cable is out of the weather anyway. I'm not sure where I got the material information, but I wasn't born with it. I think it came out of a Bingelis book. I used 7/19 in both cases for maximum flexibility, which is especially helpful when looping around the thimbles at the ends... Galvanized is stronger by far and worth the extra inspection safety wise as far as I personally believe. I was going to go the same way until I looked at the breaking strength cable size foe size. Need 3/16 inch stainless to equal 1/8 inch galvanized strength figures. Weight difference may be slight but every little bit does add up. Most everything is a loss. I had a drill press, 10" belt/disc sander, Metal chop saw, band saw, Parts washer, etc. that went under. I also had a number of other power hand tools that are most likely toast as well. I will try to disassemble and clean out the motors. Hopefully I can salvage some of them. All my Corvair stuff went under and will need some major cleaning. Fortunately I hadn't had my heads rebuilt yet. I won't be finishing the engine any time soon. So much stuff was strewn about and caked with mud, I have no idea where to start. The Long-EZ stayed attached to the hoist and floated a bit so there was only minimum water intrusion there. That's a plus. It was surprising that the canard and prop didn't get wet. I had the canard on top of a shelf with the prop sitting on top of that. There was an egg crate type foam under it for padding at one end and some blue foam under the other. Apparently the whole thing just floated up with the water level and settled on the far side of the hangar without damage as the water receded. The KR is still sitting out on the east end of the ramp and probably will be for awhile. Both Richard's planes are down there as well. They only got about 4' of water in their hangar. The tailwind filled partly with water. They said they were going to replace the fabric anyway. They really didn't have much damage other that losing a coupe rolls of fierglass. My Rollaway tool box was in their hangar and filled with water. I have spent the last few days cleaning that out and cleaning what tools are salvagable. SS tends to work harden over time and strands will start braking. But if the cable stays straight then the chose is yours. You could even go along for the ride. I'm retired and fly on military birds all the time no cost. Sometimes a little tricky getting a package on board but usually a twenty to the loadmaster does the trick. The box is oversize for shipping UPS and so will cost about $100 to ship. Ray is in New Orleans And I'm in Fayetteville NC. Is anyone on the net traveling from near New Orleans east that would be willing to transport the cowling molds for me. I would be glad to pay a tank of gas as long as you are not filling up a 747. The rudder cables on a tailwheel KR may see higher loading at times if you apply rudder input and the tailwheel experiances a sideload and you aren't using springs. Other than that the loads on the rudder cables are small compared to the strength of the cables, stainless or galvanized. I have a fairly long stick with probably a 3 to 1 leverage advantage but even then I doubt if I've ever applied more than 2 pounds of force to the stick. If your swedge fittings are all good and your control system does not cause the cable to wear, how low will a cable rated at 900+ pounds last? Design you system for minimum wear, check the cables VERY WELL on the annual and go fly !!!!!!!! Don't despair, some time ago, we had a flood that put 4.5 feet of mud though a work shop. Tools, lathes, electriacl hand tools, computers and materials went under. Everything was stripped down, cleaned with water and sun dried. Electrical components were also cleaned with electrical cleaner. We had a 80% recovery (even in the computer equipment). Most un-recoverable damage was from the weight of the mud or from the digging out of the equipment. You have to weigh up the cost of replacement to the cost of your time. But first things first, get flying (for some stress relief). regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/kr2.htm ------------------------------ Message: 25 Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 08:44:39 +1000 From: "Barry Kruyssen" Subject: KR> Re: Just some questions To: "CAROL&GIL" , "KRnet" Message-ID: <007d01c4fdaf$4d11e8e0$d000a8c0@technologyonecorp.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi Gil, You should go to the KR-Net web site http://www.krnet.org/ Here you can join a very imformative email group dedicated to KR2's, also there is a link to the archives with a search engine which will help answer most of your questions http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp . And most importantly there are links to built KR2's and KR2 projects in progress.
