It would be nice is someone would come up with a complete FWF package, including the carb, for a decent price. See you in Mt. Vernon - 2005 - KR Gathering See N64KR at http://KR-Builder.org - Then click on the pics There is a time for building and a time for FLYING and the time for building has expired. Daniel R. Heath - Columbia, SC -------Original Message------- From: Mark Langford Continental still makes and sells the 0-200 and always has! I thought it was no longer produced, and I got that impression from others, so it must be a common misconception. Now there's even an LSA (light sport aircraft) version that's even cheaper than the certified version, but stripped down so you can put your own alternator, carb, exhaust, or whatever on it. Right now they are working on a version that is somewhere under $15k, with all new parts. I talked to the project engineer, and he's been looking into electronic igntions for the thing, as well as cheaper carbs and even electronic fuel injection from folks like SMS. I spent all day yesterday sitting around the table with the president, chief engineer, crank expert, metallurgist, and several other guys. And yes, I did some more crank failure brain pickin' while I was there, and got a little smarter... In the KR group every now and then we see a KR that was built with cost in mind, like Bill Clapp. To me the question is how much reliability can be put into the engine without paying someone else a profit and development costs. Both of these costs tend to push the cost to the limit of what a homebuilder can afford. I didn't mean to give y'all that impression, just thought I'd pass on what I'd learned about the 0-200 for those that might be interested. I'm still convinced that the Corvair is the way to go, budget or not. I'm not sure that I'd use an 0-200 if somebody plopped a free one on my front porch, although my cheif engineer says I'm too vital to the job to risk my life with anything but a certified airplane. I am convinced that the actions that I've taken (nitriding the crank, proper prop indexing, reverting to 2700cc, shortening the prop hub, CNC'd prop) will assure that I never break another crank. And I'm still planning on building another 3100cc engine to replace the 2700cc (which might be running this weekend), but the crank will be nitrided even deeper for that one. I already have shot-peened, stress relieved crank from Jeff Ballard for the 3100. All indications are that the rear starter had absolutely nothing to do with the problem. Two TCM crank experts told me that point-blank on Tuesday, along with several other experts (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/flexplate/problem.html#update for details). In my mind, the Corvair is still the way to go... We do offer an 100 Hp engine, model TMXO-200 experimental engine that is assembled from new TCM parts. This engine is all new parts and includes items such as the mags, harness, spark plugs, starter & clutch assembly, alternator and carburetor. At the present time we are in the midst of a price change and are assessing our costs and lead times. I regret that I must get back to you when I have this important information. I hope this to be less that one week, but I will contact you regardless as soon as we determine our new costs. Regards, Michael Michael_Yousik@teledyne.com) Engine Sales Mgr. The Sept 04 Kitplanes ran an advert from Mattituck offering similar engines based on all new parts - typically TMX O-200 $15k and TMX IO-240 for $17k. A complete new TMX IO-360 for $19.6k (TMX O-360 = $18k) I heard that Superior Air Parts are offering something even better but I have not been able to find any specific info. I recently bought a $20 push-pull from Wick's and needed to get another one. Today, I was in the local Farm and Fleet store and seen the push-pull control for a whopping $4.95. The only difference was the knob was made of cast aluminum instead of black plastic. I bought it and will install it tomorrow as a carb heat control. A $15 dollar savings. They have nice T-handle controls also. Keep your eyes open, there are great finds out there.
