Lately I have had a few senior moments and not much fun. Yesterday I went to taxi test and fly after thinking that I had finished the brakes and pulled Tweety out of the hanger. After several attempts to start the engine with the fuel still turned off, I finally got started. The initial runup went well and brakes held and did not have any air. A short taxi later and I was at the runup pad. I did a complete preflight runup to include full power and the brakes held well. On to the runway and cleared for takeoff. I clamped down on the brakes and applied full power and all of a sudden the left brake went flat. I aborted takeoff and taxied back to the hanger. Some fluid was dripping and I thought a seal had ruptured. Oh no, not another senior moment, there to my embarrassment lying on the hanger floor was the inner pressure plate and brake pad. I'm glad no was around to see all this. I put all the parts in pushed some 5606 from the bleeder up to the master cylinder and went to work. Well, this morning the OAT was 69 here in SE Michigan. The tower reported the wind as calm. I went out to the runway got clearance and away I went. I had not been up in a month or so, and Tweety was anxious to fly. Away we went. I had 3300 on the tach and 35 on the MP. I climbed at 70. I was shocked and excited at how beautiful and still the air was and how hard Tweety climbed in the cool air. I was at pattern altitude before crossing the fence. That equates to 1000 ft in about 30 seconds. Yeeeeeee Haaaaaaaa!!! What can you do before breakfast and work that is that much fun. How it's back to work on Tweety. I can finish draining my fuel tank, empty the oil and tip Tweety on her nose so that I can do some painting on the bottom. Bob Glidden is the campmaster since he has the refreshments. Last year there were quite a few folks camping. Several tents, a couple of trailered campers and a motor home. There will most likely be more this year. The campground is the center of activity in the evenings. That is where all the lies are told. I will be there telling my share. Man I can't wait. But after sitting for a few years, the first time I filled it with fuel it was dead. I suspected that the sender's windings had been coated with off-gassing vinylester, and I hoped that the windings would get cleaned by the wiping action of flying with fuel. Sure enough, it eventually worked after about 25 hours, but it never read more than about half full when the tank was actually full. Accuracy like that is not exactly confidence inspiring. While I have it at home, I visited that problem, and last night I was able to fine tune the gauge to read EMPTY when I was down to zero fuel by swapping resistors between ground and the sensor body. 18 ohms did the job. What really blew my mind is when I filled it up and it ended up exactly on the FULL mark! Sometimes you just get lucky! I still haven't run my engine yet, because the folks that were supposed to be upholstering my seat have been doing everything BUT my seat. I'm not sure it's a bright idea to fire it up without sitting at the controls, so I'll just wait. I might as well finish up behind the panel so I can put the front deck and canopy on, so it might be Monday or even later before I run it now. And the hurricane is expected to cause rain at the first of the week anyway, but I should be towing it to the airport in the next few days. I plan to fly it out of Moontown's 150 foot wide 2300' long grass strip (I've already been in and out of there easily). I'll let you know how it goes. Yes, I'll be cutting it close, but there's a three day weekend coming up. All I need it 5 hours on it to make it to the Gathering... This is going to be a great place for a gathering. Look for the brochure on your table at the banquet. As most of you know, we have been promoting this location for the last 2 years and Wayne and I have been in communication about it. It is going to be hard to get any better than Mt. Vernon, but I am sure Wayne will give his best shot, if you vote to go there, and I will do all that I can to help him with it. See you in Mt. Troy Trolle ( hope I got that right ) from national was there to make several presentations and had some very kind and inspirational words in praise of our chapter. We are celebrating our 40th anniversary and have just re-furbished the SAC, 15 years after Paul Poberesny helped us dedicate it. I just wanted to let you know what a great bunch of people there are in EAA242, we raised over $35 000 for the restoration and continued maintenance of this facility, from donations from the members.
