They have the NW Antique fly in there and it is close to the Evergreen Aviation Museum where the Spruce Goose is kept. They run a shuttle service and will pick you up from the flight office and run you over to the museum about a mile or so away. That Spruce Goose is huge, made mostly out of birch plywood. It never flew very far on that first flight in '47 because the tail was weak and might have come off in flight. After they fixed that they put a spiral staircase below the flight deck and it never flew again. The war was over and the government cut funding for the project and also the second model, with clamshell nose doors, that was on the drawing board. The doors were built but the plane never was. They have a large opening cut into the side where you can climb a staircase, walk in and look around. Lots of excellent wood work in there. Also at the air show the stunt pilot Wayne Handley made his last flight in the Raven which is now on display over at the museum. My KR was the only one there this year and drew lots of attention. I think these planes will be more popular as gas prices go past $3.00 per gallon. I burn about 3.2 gal. per hr. -Joe ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2005 05:37:01 -0400 From: "Orma" Subject: Re: KR> Last weeks fly in To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <013901c5abb4$0c80ae70$0302a8c0@ROBBINS1> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Sounds like a nice fly in. I have searched the archives, visited just about every site for those who are building or have built KR2S's, and looked at every aspect carefully. My question is about conflicting information that I am reading. WHat is the max gross weight of a KR2S with a Corvair engine? The Rand site shows 980lbs, and I've seen some people post specs up to 1100lbs. Facts: I am 6'1, 260lbs. Spending my whole flying life in Cessnas I have always kept my front seat weight below 400lbs, mainly because my lady friends were always tiny. But, if my KR2S comes in at 750lbs with a Corvair engine, that makes just my fat butt putting the plane over it's limit, and I haven't even put fuel in it yet!! I really want to build one of these things and incorporate the new airfoil and the Corvair engine, but it has to be able to handle me and fuel.. ?? Any comments would be appreciated. My background: I am an ASE certified Master Technician in both auto and light truck areas, and have extensive experience with air cooled engines (motorcycles) and have lots of wood working experience. With that in mind, I have read a lot from all of you and have learned how much I DON'T know. WHat a refreshing wake up call...just when I was getting bored :-) A new challenge is ahead of me, and the KR is it...if it's in the cards. Helppppppp!!!! I have set my max at 1300 lbs. I fly my KR2S all the time at 1100 lbs and I have flown it at loaded with fuel at 1137 lbs. At full fuel climb rate is not as good as with half tanks. I get about 800 fpm with full tanks and get 1100 fpm with half tanks. In the air, I see no difference in flight performance. Your take off distance may be a little longer and your climb rate may be a little less. Loaded up, my take off roll is about 1400-1500 feet and of course this depends on winds, temps and density altitude. The KR is an amazing little plane and in MY OPINION, you should have no problem. Remember, no two KR's are alike, just similar, therefore every KR will have different specs and limitations. I know 1300 sounds like a high gross but I have no doubts in my plane. Probably about 60% of the area got out. My wife and kids are safely in Houston. I had a sister and mother to deal with. They wouldn't go and so I had to stay as well. I finally got my mother to go to the hospital with my sister (who is a nurse - she was on vacation but volunteered to go to work so my mother could get into that shelter). Now I have all of their pets (5 dogs) at my house. It was the only way they would go. I am fairly well covered. I have a small boat in the driveway if I should need it. The real concern is the aftermath - no power, no water, no sewerage, possible flooded conditions. Luckily I have tons of camping gear, propane, lanterns, stoves etc. I even have freeze dried foods. I can hang out for about 2 weeks before it becomes a real problem. Without having to worry about anyone else I have a lot of flexibility. I will just watch the news and play on the computer until (if) I lose power. I'll send another note around midnight if possible and then dawn again. It's like a scary adventure. Yes I am in New Orleans. If I don't make it to the Gathering it will be because we are still digging out from this Hurricane. At the moment I plan to be there. It is now Sunday evening at 6:10 p.m. There is a good stiff wind blowing but no rain yet. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
