Are there any issues I should be aware of in using the RR unit? I realized that Langford, Jeff Scott, and others have built theirs from scratch, but I assume that’s because the standard dimensions of the boat were altered. My boat is only a couple inches wider at the shoulders so the tank fits a little snug toward the front and loose toward the back. I assume I can secure it well enough once I start glassing. And it would seem from the archives that having it be removable is a good idea. Comments and suggestions welcome. Rick Coykendall home.comcast.net/~rickcoy/RAF.html P.S. Sorry to say I can’t make it to the gathering this year -- but I’ve been blessed with a bunch of freelance medical editing work. ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 19:44:39 -0500 From: "Mike Turner" Subject: Re: KR> gathering fishing To: "KRnet" Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Bigger as the night goes on!!! It can be trick to seal, but works well. My only negative comment is that the radio stack in on the right side of the aircraft and not in the center. With some radio's, especially with LCD displays, the radio can be hard to read. I find myself wishing the radio was in the center. No point in pulling the sides together at the firewall if the engine is wider than me. I'm going to measure the engine next time I'm at the airport (probably tomorrow) and see what the distance between the rocker covers is. I figure that should be a decent width for the firewall since I'm planning on cheek cowls anyway. -- Steve 3343v@swbell.net N3343V- '75 C150M N205FT- KR1 #6170 He who seeks will find, and he who knocks will be let in. ------------------------------ Message: 11 Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 22:21:48 -0500 From: "3343V" <3343v@swbell.net> Subject: Re: KR> Question for the experienced ones... :-) To: "KRnet" Message-ID: <05da01c5ad11$f5123e70$0200a8c0@Katana> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Ron Smith wrote: > > Hi Steve, I have some experience in doing what you plan to do. Drag reduction and looks is all. No strength to be had and nothing needs to be contained down there. I'll probably just skip it and save the time, weight, cost, and trouble. > If you are not careful with the resin and foam the weight will bite > you in > the butt. Yup, but bagging everything tends to get rid of the extra resin. It goes through the peel ply and into the breather. Pull everything apart and you have a surface ready for paint with nothing more than a wipe down with MEK. > The standard KR2 was 64 lbs at the boat stage with center spars and > fittings. Mine is 80 lbs. I have streched mine to 24", and 6" wider and 2" > taller. I'm starting to think that I'll only need 6" in front since I can move the engine forward a bit, but back is tough. Won't be any wider, maybe a hair taller, and around 25" long between wing and tail, but it's a KR1, so things are a bit different. > Make sure you use the method as described by Mark Langford, where you > say > out the cloth on plastic sheeting, so you can add just the right > amount of resin to the lay up. That really saves weight. He has a very good technique there, best way to do it if you don't have a vacuum bagging setup. I'll be doing quite a bit that way, actually. The wings aren't easy to bag since they're hollow and would get squished. Now if I build foam core skins with kevlar on both sides it'll be different. > See my fuselage construction @ the link below. What are you using for the skin? Just glass (or similar) or is there foam in there somewhere? -- Steve 3343v@swbell.net N3343V- '75 C150M N205FT- KR1 #6170 He who seeks will find, and he who knocks will be let in. ------------------------------ Message: 12 Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 20:25:23 -0600 (Mountain Standard Time) From: "Bill Starrs" Subject: KR> fuel tank To: Message-ID: <4313C393.000003.03636@BILL> Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I tried the fiber glass tank and could not keep it fro leaking so I used the fiber glass as a mold to make an aluminum tank 17 gal. and it works fine. It has a odd shape so a radio can fit and other things. ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ See KRnet list details at http://www.krnet.org/instructions.html End of KRnet Digest, Vol 347, Issue 333 *************************************** ================================== ABC Amber Outlook Converter v4.20 Trial version ==================================
