Jeff Scott -- "Robert Morrissey" wrote: Now a question on reassembly. I was taught last century that the newly installed greased bearings were installed on the wheel/axle assembly and the axle nut tightened to a good snug fit. The wheel was rotated to 'work" out the excess grease. Next the axle nut was loosened and retightened to take up all slack in the bearing. Then the nut was cotter pinned to the axle as is or went to the next tighter position to perform the cotter pin operation. This was done to prevent false brinelling created by the vibrating wheel in flight on a loose bearing. Is this still true or has the technology of aircraft wheels, bearings, and or lubrication got us past this problem? I drove off the road at one point to let some traffic by, and when I pulled back up on the road, the brake disk scraped the edge of the pavement. This morning I went to the hangar to check on, it brake bleeder is missing completely. I couldn't get up under it to check, but it either got ripped completely out of the $300 caliper, or sheared off. I'd have ordered a new caliper (just to make sure I can fly to the Gathering), but AS&S is out of stock with a 4 week lead time. I did order new bleeder seats and screws, which will be delivered tomorrow FedEx. My question is, does anybody have a 30-9C caliper sitting around doing nothing that I could borrow if I get in a jam early next week? If so, and you don't mind me borrowing it, ship it to me. Post to the net that you're doing it, so I don't get more than one! I only need the caliper itself (and bleeder screws, if installed). Ship to: 296 Taylor Denton Lane, Harvest, AL 35749. I'll pay shipping both ways, but I don't need it FedEx'ed, I don't think. If I could get it by Tuesday of next week that would get me there, I think. I may not need it, but I want a backup plan, in case my caliper is terminal... Ship to: 296 Taylor Denton Lane, >>Harvest, AL 35749. I'll pay shipping both ways, but I don't need it FedEx'ed, I don't think. If I could get it by Tuesday of next week that would get me there, I think. Just curious ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Langford" To: "KRnet" Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 11:22 PM Subject: KR> plane's at the airport... > Jeanie and I hauled the plane to the airport tonight, and then the wings in a separate trip, one in back of my GTI, and one in back of her A4 stationwagon (we're the only couple in Alabama that doesn't own at least one pickup truck). We're entertaining our customer at work today and tomorrow, but I hope to take off after lunch and put the wings on, and be ready to fly Saturday morning. Hazel Green (M38) is only 2700' long, but even worse, is only 40' wide. Easy enough to take off on, but a little tougher to land! I'm going to fly over to MDQ three miles away and do about 20 touch-n-goes, then to the "Moontown" (3M5) grass strip (2200' long, but 160' wide) for some more sharpening of the skills, and then back to M38 for my first landing attempt. At least the hangar at M38 where I'm keeping it is very nice, complete with epoxy coated floor and Heineken in the fridge! The weather is severe clear for the next few days. Wish me luck. > > It sure is nice to have my basement back after 12 years.
