Will you be going back to the 3100 later? Was it the same prop both ways? Great effort - good luck. Have a great gathering, you surely deserve it - I really look fwd to the pictures. I generally drop the board to half position at 100 mph on base leg. This will drop the speed quickly to 85 mph. On final and about 1 mile out I drop the board fully. This is like slamming on the brakes...the plane very quickly slows down to 65 mph depending where you keep the nose. Amazingly, when the brake is lowered, the nose pitches up...you would think the drag would cause it to pitch down. Touchdown is around 60 mph. I have accidentally taken off with the board fully extended. Rotation and takeoff speed were the same but the plane would not climb higher than 300' nor would it get over 80 mph. It would maintain altitude which is a good thing because under the pressure of trying to figure out why I could not climb, I used up several miles of air. Once I realized the brake was down, I slowly raised it and away I went. I have not actually done the numbers on gliding in flight configuration and in landing configuration to see exactly what the difference is. If you need those numbers, let me know and I will do the test. As I have labored for the last three days. Scraping, scraping and more scraping. Heck, I am still scraping and painting, painting and still more painting. Busy trying to fix that oil leak last night, and in a hurry to get flying this morning to head to my father's place in south Alabama. I got 45 minutes in the air before I saw a drop of oil crawling out of the cowling, and the visibility was not that great. I had no horizon other than scud, so I turned around and chalked it up to engine time. Did a few touch and goes at MDQ and then managed another landing at Hazel Green. I did a top speed run in four directions at 7000' and got an average of about 163 mph ground speed from the GPS. GPS also told me my glide speed is about 11:1 at 80 mph, and 10:1 at 90 mph. The engine is humming along nicely, and I'm sure the new Sensenich prop I got from William Wynne helps out . I'm looking forward to some uneventful flying from here on out! My cure was to match drill to holes for push pins at diagonally opposite corners of the work, other otherwise immobilize it somehow with small nails to keep it from sliding around. Thought I might just post the fact that I've been up to my elbows in engine removal today. About 3 weeks ago I was out flying and doing touch and goes getting ready for the Gathering. Things went pretty good and the plane was running fine. I had a BFR, Medical and Annual to do so I did the first two and was going to finish the annual today. I had already done my oil change and went over all of the control systems previously so all I was supposed to do today was adjust the valves and clean the plane. Well when I heard this scrapping of metal sound when I went to adjust the valves I knew something was up. For those who have newer alternators, this isn't a problem. However, for those of us antiques that still have the old syncro alternators, they fail at some point because the glue used for the magnets doesn't quite have what it takes. Mine failed, probably on the last flight. I could hear scraping sounds and feel it as I pulled it through. So, today I removed the engine from the mount, placed it on the wooden stand I had built previously when I replaced the rear seal and removed lots of stuff from the engine and plane. Now it sits on the stand with the accessory case removed and the cause of the scraping on my bench. The alternator. Tomorrow I will order a new alternator with one day delivery and looks like I'll be up late Wednesday putting it back together. Good news is that with the alternator removed the engine only has compression and no scraping so it sounds real good when I pull it through. I should get it back together on Wednesday night or Thursday afternoon after driving over with the PA stuff. So I should be there Thursday evening or if all else fails on Friday when I get it to the condition that I like it. I'm a pretty conservative guy so I like it when I like it. Looks like a record breaking Gathering. By the way, I still remember sanding regardless of the fact it was 15 years ago....... And I still hate it..... To: Message-ID: <48vhmp$18csfgr@mxip03a.cluster1.charter.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Finally after a month of procrastinating I installed my spars in the center section. The Langford Templates worked great. With the use of a "smart level" I only had to shim the rear spar. The forward spar went in snug and measured level and square to the tail. The Template held the rear spar in place until I was able to get the correct shims in place under the spar. While the T88 is drying I continue to check the entire installation. It's nice to go out and hear the level beep when I put it on the level line. One note I am using the 5048 with a forward spar height of 8.19". Looks really high. Can't wait to try it on. Looks like I will be reclining in my lounge chair while in flight. Yal have fun in Mt. Vernon I'll miss ya. I am amazed at how quickly a KR builder can take an engine down and put it back in service. Joe Horton, Mark L, Mark J, and now Jim. You guys are amazing. See you in Mt. The internal drive train takes over because like Langford said, "the KR is addicting" and you will do whatever it takes to get back in the air asap. Especially when there is a Gathering knocking on your door. BTW.....man it is only three days (3 days) count em...THREE DAYS......one, two, three....only three days till that cross country flight to MT Vernon. I must say I am stoked.....excited....blood is boiling......heck, I do not count the days anymore...I am counting the hours. 60 HOURS and I head to the airport. Mark has a Sturba 54x54 and turns a max of 3200 also and yet his speed is 148. The only difference that I see is that you and your plane are lighter. (Please don't shoot me Mark) If you were to add the extra weight do think the numbers would remain the same. If so, would you suspect that the prop is better?? My wheel pants are off and may have to remain so till after the gathering.
