I've been flying since 3 years now (I've got my PPL in France) and I would like to move on to something else: build my own aircraft and enjoy flying that way. As my dad had begun a Cozy several years ago, I was already pretty much aware about what is an experimental aircraft but now it's time to go for my own project. I'm ready to spend hours in my workshop and now here are some questions about a KR2S project: - I didn't have a look yet at the plans themselves but I'd like to know how is the building process divided into parts. Whilst I'm looking at the different groups (1, 2, ...) of raw materials, I guess everything has to be built from "'scratch"? (apart from those molded parts) - What would you think of mounting a Rotax 912 (100 HP) on the aircraft? Apparently, the Rotax has a gross weight lesser than a Continental O - 200. We are always glad to hear from new people considering the KR as their airplane of choise. The KRnet will be quiet for the next 4 -5 days. We are having the annual get together in Mount Vernon, Illinoise. It offically starts today and ends Sunday. Many of our members are traveling there as we speak. I am leaving tomorrow morning for Mount Vernon. The KRnet emails will pick up quickly next week. We have a number of KR people in Europe, including UK, France, and Italy to name just a few. You do not have to build everything from scratch if you are willing to pay more money for the pre molded parts or machined parts. If you build all from scratch it will be easier to modify the airplane to suit you. For example, the KR pre molded parts will fit most easily on an UNMODIFIED fuselage...and the engine specified. The cowling may not fit over a Rotax engine. Rotax 912 is probably two or three times the cost of a GREAT PLAINS VW or a Corvair conversion and no more reliable. Engines (the controversial subject) a.. Certified engines like the O-200, etc are too expensive and a bit fuel hungry b.. Corvair engines are an auto engine and unless you are in the US may be a bit hard to get parts for. Also as I understand it, the crank shaft lateral thrust bearing is on the center journal which could cause problems for the cracking of cranks (someone please correct me if I'm wrong where the thrust bearing is). c.. VW conversions, yes another auto engine but they have been in aircraft for ever. The problem here is that they are heavy for the horse power they deliver. People try squeeze more HP out of them and then they become unreliable. You have to check the tappets regularly. d.. Jabiru engines are light, designed for aircraft, reliable and fuel efficient, but you have to check the tappets regularly and can only use a timber prop. e.. Rotax 4 stroke engines (don't know much about the Rotax 2 stroke engines) are light, designed for aircraft, reliable and fuel efficient. They have water cooled heads, hydraulic tappets, you can use an in-flight adjustable prop (if you want). Very user friendly in that you don't have do much on them, except turn the key and fly, but a bit expensive. Best Horse Power for weight against MY dollars is the Jabiru. The above are only my opinions and will no doubt cause some heated discussion :-) This was the process led me to deciding on a Jabiru. regards Barry Kruyssen Cairns, Australia RAA 19-3873 kr2@BigPond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/kr2/kr2.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Antoine F8CKH To: krnet@mylist.net Sent: Friday, September 09, 2005 6:44 AM Subject: KR> Hi from a new comer / prospective builder in Europe Dear all, My name's Tony, I'm a 24 year old Flight / Attendant for a british airline. (apart from those molded parts) - What would you think of mounting a Rotax 912 (100 HP) on the aircraft? Apparently, the Rotax has a gross weight lesser than a Continental O - 200. Anyway, This was just a quick introduction and I hope to hear from you soon, guys! I am reading through the KR2S Spruce List. Can anyone tell me the size of the "Outer rear spar vert pcs"? My list has two of them listed. 1 pc 1/2 x 1 ?/? 42". 1 pc 1/2 x 1/2 x 42". (The original KR2 timber list says it is 1/2 x 1/2 x 42", but I think it has been up-sized for the KR2S.) The 340 took all my time. For the past week I worked feverously trying to fix some squawks on Tweety. The gas tank was leaking, the transponder was out, the brake change was not complete, and it's bottom needed some paint. For the most part most of the work got completed today by 4PM. Full of gas and baggage we headed to the runway and off we went. The problem is that we did not get far. It appears that a while back (35 hours) when I was moving CHT probes around, I did not re-torque the heads suffiently to preclude gas leaks. After takeoff today, the gas leak on the pilots rear cylinder told me to stay home. Lift off was normal and I was climbing through about 500 AGL when the cylinder stopped firing. The cockpit was shaking from the three cylinder operation and I squeezed the mike, and told the tower that I had an emergency and needed a runway. I was offered the full pattern and declined while requesting a 180 turn and return to same runway with a tail wind. I was asked earlier this afternoon what my speed was at the time the engine started to miss. I was climbing at 75 when the engine started to shake. I lowered the nose, executed a sharp 180. and reduced rpm and was close enough with enough altitude to feel the need to pull full flaps for a landing on the down wind runway. The tail wind was 6 kts right at my back. As I pulled power the prop quit turning and I got some glider practice for the rest of the trip down. I never did look at the airspeed, I just flew the plane to the ground just like a normal landing. I turned off the runway and stopped in the grass on the side. The engine did restart after some effort and popped and hissed all the way back to my hanger. A friend of mine was filming my departure and stated that he has the whole thing on film. If it's any good, I'll put it on a web page. I have pictures of the head and the damage to it and will upload a page tonight. As for the trip to Mt. Vernon, well, it's only Thursday, and a lot can happen between now and the end. Orma L.
