Even if it is an AN bolt. In my case I use a peice of 3/4" chromoly steel tube so I can insert a tow bar into one end of the wheel fairing and move my plane around on the ground. I've located a good tapered bearing from McGuire Bearing Co. here in S.E. Portland that is well priced. I want a 3/4" ID and don't want to change anything on my nosewheel fork because it works. The specs are: Timken #LM11949 @ $6.49ea. (you need 2ea.) This is the bearing itself. The cup, or race, is # LM11910 @$2.44 ea. and 1.781" OD. I can make it work on my nose wheel. Another smaller (sized on the outside) bearing that is available is #4A @ $15.76 ea. (you need two) and the race for that is #6, @ $5.32 ea. I will go with the bigger ones. Do a google search, get the address, and they will ship them to you if that's what you want. -Joe Message: 18 Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2005 21:29:16 -0500 From: "Steve Bray" Subject: RE: KR> Landing Gear (again) To: krnet@mylist.net Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Hi Joe Non-standard in this case means they don't have it. This is a bearing distrubitor that I've never been to that didn't have 3 to 5 grades, prices, of any size. I think the od was standard but the id was odd for the od. I didn't push it because I don't like the set-up. It has a 3/16 bolt running through the axle. It's a Dehli (sp) set-up and I take it that this works but I want more between my prop and the ground. I'm a ways from useing it but when the time comes think I will make another axle in a common size, 3/4, and put a 3/8 bolt through it. To put cone bearings in means they would need a nut on each end to keep the pre-load right. Ball bearings should work fine if they are good ones. As I say I'm a ways off and still thinking of going back to a tailwheel but was wondering if other people were using this set-up, >that 3/16 bolt scares me. My feeling is that the KR series is very similar to open source software, in that the basics are there but people are free to apply their own input and interpretation. My interest lies torward the KR2SXL with 6.00x6 tires and as wide as possible. I am really intrigued by the inexpensive possibilities while allowing the expression of ones sense of craftsmanship. I find the ongoing discussion of nose vs. tail wheel humorous, having extensive experience in both the DC-3 and the B747 two of the biggest examples of both, I've always gone with "220 or 221 what ever it takes". As far as the next gathering have here in Alaska be adventurous! We seldom get hurricanes although a category 5 in the Aleutian Islands is just a not so nice day. Back to lurking. For those interested in the SUB installations two names come to mind. Steve Makish and Bob Lester are the only two that I know who have SUCCESSFULLY flewn many hours behind Subaru engines in a KR2. They know all the problems and had all the bugs worked out. Since then they have removed the Subarus and installed Corvair engines. I believe Steve has 150 hours or better on his now and I have 290 hours on mine. WHY the change? To move from a more expensive, complicted engine that can wear out in 500 hrs to a much simpler engine that is easier to maintain and costs less to build. Now all the installation packaging is worked out and available and there are corvair engine running that have over 1200 hours on them and never been down for major maintenance. I like the Corvair personally and will continue to fly behind it. The first customer built Whisper motor glider which was built in record time was groundlooped during taxi testing. The test pilot got airborne unexpectedly, got a fright, cut power, stalled it and came down hard. Once sideways, its leading wheen rim broke and the gear dug in. the gear leg was ripped off, wing tip damaged and the prop broken. Lucky the Whisper is a strong little plane, it was repaired in record time and is apparently undergoing further "taxi testing". I have decided to splash out on a dragonfly canopy for my project so my standard bubble canopy is up for sale. It has a frame, roll over bar and strong points for the attachment of canopy latches. It has bought new and has never been more than two metres above the ground. My e-mail address is below. I bought a used David Clark headset on eBay for $60 which is a model H10-50. I emailed DC after I received it and asked them what it would cost to upgrade the headset to the latest technology and they responded by telling me this headset is now out of production and is a high noise general aviation version of the H10-56 Helicopter headset which now sells for about $650. They also said the upgrade would be $81.25 so I sent the headset to them and just got it back this morning. They installed a new mic, new mic boom, new mic muff, new ear foams, new foam inside the the headset cups, a new communication cord with new plugs, new ear gel seals, new double foam headband comfort pad cover and completely tested and tuned the headset. The only thing I got back that actually looked like what I sent them was the plastic green ear cups. All of these components, if bought from a major parts house would have been over $200. What a deal for a factory upgraded headset. Oh yea, it also has a new warranty. Talk about a company that cares about it's customers, David Clark is definitely one that does. I can't wait to go fly with this headset this afternoon. I flew down to my father's farm last weekend. Details are at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/firstfarmtrip/ . I actually hollered "YEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA!" while rolling out. Down on the farm seemed like the perfect place! I'll be in traveling on business for the next three weeks, so you won't be hearing much in the way of progress reports from me. I'm trying to keep it light, since there are four of us traveling in one car (and an internet connection costs a fortune in European hotels), so I'm not carrying the laptop. See y'all later...
