Mark Jones +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Several of the pictures show Mark L. making a spring assembly to wrap the exhaust pipe to maintain spacing for the shroud and for additional heat transfer. There is a cheap, ready made alterative at the hardware store. It is the old style screen door spring that is 12 to 14 inches long and very tightly wound. Just stretch the spring to get the coil spacing you want and install it. When stretched beyond it's spring back length it maintains that shape. It has a connecting loop on each end that you can use to secure it with. It's not stainless but I figure you can replace it every five years or so for $2 or $3. I tried that, straight out of Tony Bengelis' book, but the only springs I could find were indeed "very tightly wound", and I couldn't begin to stretch them out without the mechanical advantage of a screen door working for me. That's why I finally spent a few minutes and made my own. Obviously, your mileage has varied! I'm sure the weight of the MAC trim servo can be found somewhere (I wrote it down at home), but it's practically negligible. AS&S catalog says 4.0 ounces, but I don't think it's even that much (I'll update this tonight if I find out differently). I'll bet it's a wash, weight wise, but I highly recommend it, whatever it weighs. You'd want the .7" travel version. I have a small trim tab (maybe a quarter the size of the plans call for), and I only use about a third of the trim travel. Mark Langford ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'll second what Mark said. I had a fully mechanical trim system installed but I couldn't seem to get the slop out of the trim tab. I was concerned that it may cause flutter and rip off in flight. I totally removed it and installed the MAC (now Ray Allen) system and it works great. I have zero slop in the trim tab now. My indicator quit working after about 10 hours of flight but I never bothered to send it back for repair. I never really paid much attention to it anyway. Here is some more. I got in a flight this morning before work. Out side temp was about 38 deg and I kept steaming up the canopy on the ramp but OK in the air. She climbed like crazy in the cold showing 1500/ min. I stayed in the pattern and did 3 landings. I was able to keep the speed under control and cross the numbers at 70 to 75 mph. I did one without flaps and the other 2 with flaps. They do have enough effect to make a difference. I just need to adjust the deflection angle some. I stopped on the way home and did it all over again. The temp was 71 at 2500 feet and starting to get hazy in front of the front. I stayed in the pattern the first time and did a pretty decent landing.( I didn't have to clean parts off the runway) Second time around I left the pattern and flew about 8 miles north at 3000' to see how close I had gotten with the newly installed rudder trim tab. I think I got it pretty close as I could leave my feet off the peddles. I was at a slow cruise speed of 125 mph at 2250 rpm. Climb was not as good tonight in the warmer humid air but still very respectable at 1100/min. The 2nd landing attempt was a go around that I decided pretty early as promised. I was close to 85 + crossing the numbers. We came around and set up again and made a longer finial. Speed was better and I put in full flaps and could feel her slow down with very tiny bit of pitch change. We came across the numbers at just over 70 and settled into ground effect. There was a couple few mph right cross and I felt a slight bit of side loading and it also gave a very gentle skip. She settled down and I pulled the nose wheel back up until it had to drop. To touch down speed was right at 60 mph indicated. All and all I'm still pretty happy. Today, I took half day off and went out to see what I could do about this problem. I have been thinking it over a lot and paying attention to all the input, for which I thank you. I decided to dam up the back of the pan under the engine to make that area into a sort of plenum. That was the quickest and easiest thing that I could think of, as it only took two small pieces of aluminum bent at a 90 degree angle and bolted on using the existing bolts that hold the pan on at the aft end. Well, it worked. No more running rich, so now to design a more permanent fix and implement it. The thing that I don't like about this solution is that I loose the cooling for under the engine on the oil sump. While running the engine, I was able to get a steady 3200 RPM static. I don t know if that is good, bad, or indifferent, but from what I remember of my other KR, I think it is good. Now on to other challenges like "where is all this oil coming from". It seems to be ooooozing out from everywhere. See N64KR at http://KRBuilder.org - Then click on the pics See you in Mt. I think I may have a pretty good idea as to a contributing factor on my plane, if not the total culprit. Checking the ailerons last night I noticed that on the left one I had the cusp that accurately follows the airfoil, but on the right one, I straightened out the cusp. I build those ailerons a year or so apart, and somewhere between building the first one and the second one I decided to delete the cusp in favor of reducing the aileron control system's loading. Only problem is I forgot to go back and fill in the pilot's side! Good thing my ailerons are easily removed... He makes me look like Superman! KR content: Just finished up the "almost totally redundant fuel/ignition/battery system". Will put the plane back together (again) tomorrow night and fly on Thursday. Friday I'll head off on a great adventure (460 nautical miles) to Corvair College #9. See ya there... The bad news is that it will most likely not help, sorry.
